Here’s Tim Curry’s role in remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again explained. Tim Curry is an actor will many iconic roles to his name. His portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s IT haunted the nightmares of an entire generation of younger viewers. Likewise, he endured tortuous makeup to play the unforgettable Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend from 1985, and that same year he also played butler Wadsworth in cult-favorite Clue.

Even in smaller roles in the likes of Home Alone 2 – where Curry is the sequel’s secret weapon – or Congo, he tended to steal the show. Easily his most beloved performance is Dr. Frank-N-Furter from the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The movie adapted the Richard O’Brien-created musical of the same name, and the story of this 1975 classic sees a repressed young couple seeking shelter in a castle owned by Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist working on creating the ultimate male named Rocky Horror. There’s rarely been casting quite so perfect as Tim Curry and Frank-N-Furter, but the movie’s incredible music and energy has seen it endure for over 40 years.

While there was once talk of a theatrical remake, a new take on the concept arrived with 2016’s TV remake Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, with Laverne Cox taking on the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. This update also featured the likes of Adam Lambert and Christina Milian and had a movie within a movie approach to the concept, but reviews, on the whole, were decidedly lukewarm compared to the original. One major ace up the 2016 TV movie’s sleeve was the return of Tim Curry, who this time played the Criminologist.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Criminologist is a character dating back to the very first production and is there to act as narrator to the bizarre story. The role was played by Charles Gray – AKA Blofeld in Bond adventure Diamonds Are Forever – in the original and while the Criminologist isn’t a major role, it is an important part of the story nonetheless as he gives it a slightly grounded feeling.

Curry was the only cast member from the 1975 movie to return for The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, and needless to say, his presence was warmly greeted, even by critics who didn’t enjoy the remake. While a new movie reboot doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, the legacy of the musical lives on in singalong screenings and new stage versions.
