Tim And Eric’s “Father And Son” is a heartwarming drama short told in just about the creepiest way imaginable. This comic duo consists of Eric Wareheim and Tim Heidecker (Us), who scored a cult hit with their bizarre Adult Swim sketch series Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! That show displayed their unique brand of anti-humor, often featuring grotesque, unlikable characters doing awkward things. The show was really a love or hate it affair, with fans enjoying the way it milked humor from stilted performances and intentionally offputting gags, while others hated it for the same reasons.

Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! ran for five seasons, and not only did it feature guest stars in the form of Paul Rudd (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Will Ferrell and Jeff Goldblum, it also received a spinoff in the form of Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule. This starred John C. Reilly as the title character, who had a recurring role on Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Other ventures from the comic duo include 2012’s Tim And Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie and their recent sitcom parody Beef House.

In 2010, website Funny Or Die received a sketch show spinoff on HBO dubbed Funny Or Die Presents that lasted for two seasons. One of the show’s better skits came in the form of Tim and Eric’s fittingly bizarre segment “Father And Son.” This saw Tim’s pizza delivery man and acting as stepfather to Eric’s 26-year old helicopter enthusiast after his mother passes away due to a bird bite. The two men have few shared interests and struggle to connect, with the sketch seemingly acting as a parody of mid-2000s indie dramas like Little Miss Sunshine.

Tim And Eric’s “Father And Son” recalls all the tropes of an award-winning family drama but everything is shewed in their unique tone, where everything just feels off. Conversations are stilted and the main crux of the story, with the pair working on a musical performance so they can get on the cover of Father & Son magazine, results in a masterfully cringey song. There’s also a subplot where Tim learns he has a biological son that takes a bleak turn when Eric’s stepson gets jealous.

While the humor of the show won’t be for everyone, devotees of Tim And Eric’s brand of laughs should find plenty to enjoy in “Father And Son.” It even ends in an oddly heartwarming way – which isn’t a description that applies to most of their output.
