Bob’s Burgers will air a new Halloween special, “Heartbreak Hotel-oween,” with the Belcher kids donning delightfully punny costumes. Fox’s adult animated series began back in 2011 and has muscled its way up next to heavy-hitters The Simpsons and Family Guy. The series follows the Belcher family’s eccentric adventures, headed by patriarch Bob (H. Jon Benjamin), who owns the titular burger restaurant. Bob’s spooky seasonal offerings have gained a good bit of clout for the schemes and costumes the kids, awkward Tina (Dan Mintz), happy-go-lucky Gene (Eugene Mirman), and maniacal Louise (Kristen Schaal) will employ in trick-or-treating.

Season 11 will show the Belchers living through the global pandemic, expanding on the “Bored” short released in July of this year. Restauranteurs are among the demographics most heavily affected by the pandemic, especially early on. It’s poignant that the Belchers mirror reality, and we could all use a laugh at the hare-brained schemes they’ll come up with despite – and because of – the times.

Bloody Disgusting shared sneak peek images from the upcoming Halloween special. The episode will air Sunday, October 18th, from 9-9:30 PM EST, and see the children take a peek inside the hotel down the street that has been teased since the beginning of the series. Aside from that, plot details are sparse, but the Halloween costumes will not disappoint. The young Belchers will don no less than seven costumes. Wearing a jumpsuit and wielding a toaster, Tina makes a satisfying toastbuster. Simultaneously, another costume with her covered in handles may be a reference to the term “love handles” due to her obsession with writing romantic “friend-fiction” and her unfortunate naivete. Gene dresses like a real “Cat” Stevens and what appears to be a baby Red Riding Hood, while Louise dons a juice pouch outfit and a very punny Blade Bunner costume. Finally, it seems they settle on dressing up as a three-person snail. It’s anyone’s guess why.

Whatever it is they’ve got up their sleeves, it’s sure to entertain. All across the country, Halloween will be looking very different. Families may not want their kids wandering around from house to house picking up candy from strangers and then exchanging those candies with others. It’s an unfortunate recipe for disaster – a potential super spreader event. Hopefully, the Belchers will provide an amusing spin or at least remind us what the real thing is like before we can get back to trick-or-treating ourselves next year.

In September, just ahead of the season premiere, Fox confirmed that the series would be returning for two more seasons. Bob’s Burgers fans will be pleased to see the family go through the pandemic with them and come out on the other side in the future. Season 11’s production schedule was delayed somewhat by COVID-19, and some of the voice actors behind the show had to record their lines from home. Despite this, more good news is on the horizon, as the rumored and anticipated film based on the series is still in the works. Creator Loren Bouchard confirmed that the movie would release at some point. Until then, we’ll have to knuckle down and get through this with America’s favorite burger chefs by our side.
