Titans showrunner Greg Walker compared season 3’s villain Scarecrow to the fictional serial killer and cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Titans season 3 will be the show’s first to premiere on HBO Max after seasons 1 and 2 aired to much acclaim on the now-defunct streaming service, DC Universe. Based on the DC Comics team, Teen Titans, the series follows a group of young heroes who join forces to fight against evil, albeit with a darker tone than its source material.

Season 1 introduced the core cast of heroes, including Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft), Kory Anders/Koriand’r (Anna Diop), and Gar Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Season 2 expanded this cast by introducing some more well-known DC entities, including Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Esai Morales as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. Season 3 is set to introduce even more characters in Barbara Gordon (Savannah Welch), the daughter of the well-known Gotham City Commissioner who later becomes the Caped Crusader’s sidekick, Batgirl. While all of these characters are well known by DC fans, perhaps the most anticipated character appearing in Titans season 3 is Scarecrow, played by Vincent Kartheiser.

Now, to go along with EW’s exclusive first look at the character, showrunner Greg Walker talked about what fans can expect from the villain. When talking about Kartheiser’s Scarecrow, Walker compared him to Hannibal Lecter. The showrunner’s full quote can be read below:

Think Hannibal Lecter. He’s been given the opportunity to opine on ways to stop villains, and a villain breaks out in Gotham and it draws [Dick Grayson] to work with him… This is a learned psychologist who understands the human mind but also has a deep, dark vendetta to destroy people in a way that you need to be able to manifest as an actor – to find the broken and the mania. And [Kartheiser] handles both very well.

Walker’s comparison makes sense since Scarecrow will be moonlighting for the Gotham City Police Department while incarcerated in Arkham Asylum throughout season 3. This is similar to Hannibal Lecter, who is consulted by FBI Agents to help track down serial killers. Lecter is often considered one of the most iconic villains of film and literature, so seeing a version of Scarecrow that lives up to Lecter should be interesting.

Kartheiser’s performance as Scarecrow already has to live up to previous portrayals of the character, such as Cillian Murphy’s in The Dark Knight trilogy, so there are high expectations going into season 3. Though he was first portrayed by Brian Cox in the 1986 film Manhunter, Hannibal Lecter’s standing in popular culture is largely owed to Sir Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar-winning performance in 1991’s Silence of the Lambs. Now that Walker has made this comparison, audiences will just have to wait and see how Kartheiser’s performance stands up when Titans season 3 premieres on August 12.
