Warning: SPOILERS for Titans season 2

The Titans season 2 finale killed off Donna Troy aka Wonder Girl (Conor Leslie) stupidly as she tried to save the day. Only a supporting character in the first season of the DC Universe original series, Donna Troy received a lot more screentime in season 2. The heavy flashback season saw her fighting with the original Titans team and revealed a romantic interest for Aqualad, while she struggled to stay with the team in the present day as they had to fight Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke (Esai Morales) again.

The Titans’ story grew beyond the Deathstroke conflict, though, as Cadmus also kidnapped and experimented on Beast Boy and Superboy. In the finale, Donna went with Raven (Teagan Croft), Kory Anders aka Starfire (Anna Diop), and Dawn Granger aka Dove (Minka Kelly) to save the two Titans members, but Deathstroke ambushed them. After Dick Grayson aka Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites) and Rose Wilson aka Ravager (Chelsea Zhang) defeated their arch-rival, the team went to a nearby carnival to stop Gar Logan aka Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) and Superboy (Joshua Orpin) from hurting any other people. Once they were successful, everything appeared to have worked out in the Titans’ favor – despite the marketing for the finale teasing a Titan dying. This was when the show decided to kill Donna.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

When Dove returns a doll to a little girl, she is then put in harm’s way when an electric tower begins to fall. As Dove tries to move civilians away, Donna races over to catch the tower before it crushes and electrocutes anyone. The Amazonian is easily able to hold the tower up, but the electricity from the tower is responsible for killing her. Not only is the moment rushed and poorly executed to show viewers how many people (if any) were really in danger, but it’s a ridiculous end for Donna. The nearly immortal Amazon was defeated by mere electrical currents.

What makes Donna’s death all the more frustrating is that it comes out of nowhere and after the big battle has already taken place. Her death at that moment wasn’t part of a larger arc for the character about putting the team first or anything close to it. This heroic sacrificial act would’ve better-suited someone like Hank Hall aka Hawk (Alan Ritchson) given everything he went through this season and been an act of love to keep Dove safe. It’s also worth mentioning that the Titans had Superboy and Raven there who could’ve stopped the tower from falling and survived.

In this way, the timing of Donna’s death and the choice of her being the one to die feels like setup for Titans season 3, which is precisely what the finale makes it seem like, undercutting the chance of an emotional ending or belief this is permanent. After Donna’s funeral, her body is taken back to Themyscira by other Amazons and Raven decides to go with them. She reasons that there is a chance that she could bring Donna back to life. Unless Raven is suddenly not going to be part of Titans, this plays as the show leaving threads to pull on next season. And if that does mean that Donna’s death isn’t permanent, then Titans‘ decision to not give her an epic and poignant death is even more confusing.
