Warning! Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #2 below

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, the dark fate of Casey Jones has been teased. In previews for the series third issue, it seems the franchise’s iconic brawler didn’t survive the attack of the Foot Clan that led to the deaths of much of the turtle family, as a new image shows his mask sitting atop a sword surrounding destruction.

With The Last Ronin, Kevin Eastman Peter Laird have taken the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and placed them in a dark future where Michelangelo is the sole survivor among his brothers. Rafael tragically met his demise at the hands of Oroku Hiroto, grandson of the villainous Shredder – Meanwhile, how Donatello and Leonardo died hasn’t been shown yet. Michelangelo – who’s shown being suicidal – still sees and talks to his dead brothers, while transforming into the Last Ronin, whose sole goal and destiny is to kill Oroku in revenge for his fallen brothers.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #2, April O’Neil repairs the wounds suffered by Michelangelo in his latest suicide attempt. In her bunker is where he meets Casey Marie Jones, the daughter of April and Casey Jones. When he hears April call for Casey, Michelangelo briefly believes that his longtime ally has survived the dark new world. However, when Casey Marie shows up his hopes are dashed. So, what happened to the hockey stick-wielding hero? While April has kept mum surrounding Casey (she still talks to his mask and quiver of sticks), previews for issue three seem to show his tragic fate – as his mask sits tied to a sword in a pile of rubble.

Considering his absence in April and Casey Marie’s life, the fact his wife talks to his empty mask, and that the next issue teases a pile of rubble with his mask and sword sticking out – it’s safe to assume Casey is dead. He’s only made a few small appearances so far in flashbacks in The Last Ronin in the scene where the turtles find Master Splinter on death’s door.

It’s possible Casey is actually alive and perhaps captured by Oroku. However, considering all the foreshadowing that’s been done about his death – and the fact that no character is safe in The Last Ronin, we wouldn’t suggest getting your hopes up about his death being a fake-out. Casey is an integral part of the TMNT family, so losing him is another devastating blow for April and Michelangelo. Readers will find out the fate of Casey Jones when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin hits stores in May 2021.
