Tobey Maguire has admitted to being blown away by Tom Holland while the two were filming Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man: No Way Home was the biggest film of 2021. The film marks the MCU’s third standalone Spider-Man movie and follows the titular wall-crawler (Tom Holland) as he and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempt a spell which goes wrong, causing characters from previous Spider-Man series to make their way into the MCU. Throughout the film, Holland’s Spider-Man must fight against villains from other Spider-Verses, including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock. He also runs into the two previous live-action incarnations of the character, Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Maguire was the first actor to take on the role of Spider-Man in the 21st century when he appeared in the Spider-Man trilogy helmed by Sam Raimi. The three films came out between 2002 and 2007 and were a major hit with audiences. The series was even intended to have a fourth installment, however, due to the low critical reaction to Spider-Man 3 and other issues, the film was never made. Instead, the series was rebooted with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man with Garfield in the role of Peter Parker. Garfield’s film had one sequel, before the character was reimagined once again for the MCU in the form of Holland. Spider-Man: No Way Home delighted fans by bringing all three Spider-Men together.

In a recent featurette that accompanied No Way Home’s digital release (as reported by Insider), Maguire has admitted to being “blown away by Holland while shooting the movie. According to him, while shooting his first scene with Holland, Maguire was taken aback by “how good he was in the scene. Maguire also described the young Holland as a generous and vulnerable actor. See his full quote below:

“Right away, the first scene we shot together, I was just blown away by how good he was in the scene and how generous he was and vulnerable.”

These sentiments were also echoed by co-star Garfield, who also pointed out that as No Way Home was really Holland’s Spider-Man’s film, and all the pressure was on him. Words like these from such actors as Maguire and Garfield is certainly high praise for Holland. As someone who grew up as a child actor, Holland is no stranger to the entertainment industry. However, the actor is only 25 years old, and to get praise like that at such a young age from two actors who have had as distinguished careers as Maguire and Garfield have is truly an honor.

Many fans will likely find it heartwarming to hear that the two older Spider-Men found it as exciting to work with Holland as he likely found it to work with them, not to mention as exciting as audiences found the film to watch. Since No Way Home‘s release, many have been wondering if Maguire and Garfield will make another appearance in the MCU, or perhaps even make more of their own standalone films. While nothing has been reported yet, “never say never” is always a good motto. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ready to hit theaters soon, it’s clear the MCU is not done with the Multiverse yet, so the characters may yet return. Until then, Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently available to purchase and rewatch on several major streaming platforms.
