A new Black Lightning season 4 poster features the return of Tobias Whale. The CW series stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, a high school educator and superhero. Though the show is based on the DC comics character of the same name, it’s been separate from the rest of The CW’s comic book shows for most of its run. Only last season did Black Lightning officially join the Arrowverse. Williams guest starred in the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, confirming the show’s existence in The CW’s larger DC universe. Now, Freeland exists on the new Earth-Prime, along with the rest of the Arrowverse. This sets up the show for future crossovers.

Tobias Whale is arguably one of the most important characters in Black Lightning, having played a part in the show since season 1. Like in the comics, the former politician is Jefferson’s nemesis. The two have battled throughout the series’ run, which will continue when the show returns in 2021. Black Lightning‘s most recent finale, which aired earlier this year, showed Tobias still in Markovia but preparing a return to Freeland. This will likely lead to the villain causing more trouble in Black Lightning season 4.

In preparation for the Arrowverse shows’ upcoming seasons, The CW has released several character posters. Many of them have featured supporting heroes, such as The Flash‘s Iris West-Allen and Supergirl‘s Nia Nal/Dreamer. Black Lightning has taken a different approach, instead focusing on its most important villain. Check out the poster of Tobias Whale, shared on Black Lightning‘s official Twitter account, below:

Like the other posters, this one emphasizes the show’s comic origins, showing the original version of Tobias behind his live-action counterpart. It serves as a good reminder of the Arrowverse’s commitment to the comic books that started it all. The poster also suggests Tobias will continue to play a big role in season 4. This makes sense, as he’s had a huge impact on Jefferson’s life and superhero journey. All told, the new look at Tobias should make viewers even more excited for Black Lightning‘s return next year.

Though all the Arrowverse shows have been held for January, The CW has effectively kept them in the spotlight. In addition to the character posters, the network also released some with the tagline “Real heroes wear masks,” promoting safe coronavirus practices. The Arrowverse has also maintained a presence thanks to DC FanDome. The Flash had a panel at the first event earlier this month, while other shows will be featured in September. It’s clear from The CW’s marketing strategy the network plans on keeping the Arrowverse series, including Black Lightning, on viewers’ minds until 2021.
