Today’s Wordle has caused a dirty slang word to trend on Twitter. Wordle is a new word game that has taken the world by storm recently and has quickly become a part of many people’s morning routines. The game’s success has prompted many copy-cat games to spring up in the hopes of capturing some of Wordle‘s viral popularity. Even the New York Times also caught on to Wordle‘s growing fame, prompting the newspaper to buy out the game. Fans are worried by what this acquisition might mean for the future of the game but for now Wordle remains free to play and subscription free.

Wordle is designed around a relatively simple idea: the player has six chances to correctly guess a five-letter word, and each letter in each guess the player makes is confirmed to be either, incorrect, correct but in the wrong place, or correct. The simplicity of the approach to hints that the game takes allows for a diverse array of strategies and playstyles that makes Wordle appeal to a wide audience and feel accessible to many players.

The Wordle of the day today resulted in an unfortunate slang word trending on Twitter, an unforeseen consequence of a word-guessing based game growing so popular. Luckily, the word in question is not actually recognized as a real word by Wordle, although that fact was to the dismay of the game’s players whose guesses were rejected by Wordle‘s algorithm. This revelation was summed up quite eloquently by Twitter users like MrPNiles, who mentioned their disappoint at the profane word’s absence without spoiling the true answer.

It is safe to say that an occurrence like this was bound to happen eventually with a game like Wordle. There are enough unpleasant words in the English language that are of just about the right length that one way or another it would have been hard to avoid an event like this one forever. This fact was actually exploited by Star Wars writer Gary Whitta, who launched a vulgar clone of Wordle titled Lewdle. Although the situation had to gather quite a head of steam to make the word trend on Twitter, the circumstances leading to it were relatively innocuous.

Embarrassing though the coincidence might be for Wordle, the dirty minds of its player base are as much to blame for the event as anything else. The word in question which caused such havoc to be wreaked on Twitter today due to its similarity t0 a dirty slang word was by no means an unreasonable word for the game to use. In fact, the word itself was relatively easy when compared to some of the others that have been used in the past. People say that there is no such thing as bad publicity, and even if there is this probably is not what it is, so it would not be surprising if Wordle‘s popularity continues to rise after today’s events.
