Tokyo Ghoul Creator Makes Tokyo Revengers Look Haunting in New Art

Recent illustrations from Tokyo Ghoul creator Sui Ishida show Tokyo Revengers‘ Mikey and Draken in a haunting light. The two art pieces show Tokyo Majin Gang President and Vice-President in night and day illustrations that bring out the characters’ personalities through the horror mangaka’s classic watercolor-like style.

Tokyo Revengers created by Ken Wakui was first serialized in Kodansha Weekly Shonen Magazine in March 2017. The time-traveling manga focuses on Takemichi Hanagaki, an underachiever with a second chance to save his middle school ex-girlfriend from being murdered by the Tokyo Manji Gang aka Toman. The leaders of the Toman are President Mikey and Vice-President Drakken, co-founders and best friends with a goal to make Toman the biggest gang in Tokyo. Tokyo Revengers recently celebrated reaching 32 million volume copies sold back in June surpassing My Hero Academia in July sales. The anime adaption by Liden Film began airing in June and is currently ongoing.

Tokyo Ghoul creator Sui Ishida is known for his watercolor art style that shows prominently in all volume covers of the popular horror series. His new series Choujin X is no different given the similarities in horror themes between both series. In 2018 a few years after the end of Tokyo Ghoul, the artist created a Youtube channel where he live-streams his art process and gaming skills while engaging with fans. So of course fans were taken aback when the Tokyo Ghoul creator posted Mikey’s illustration on his second Twitter account (@sotonamix) and Drakken on his main account (@sotonami) in late June. Captioning both posts with a roughly translated “I ate somen noodles today” and ” I like Drakken”, the breathtaking artwork, however, spoke for itself.

The beautiful artwork of Toman leader Mikey shows the character in a tough yet endearing expression that takes way in the artist’s soft watercolor strokes. The laid-back and unruly personality of Mikey is what makes him the feared leader of Toman. Although it’s the character’s baby face that truly extenuates the mood of the illustration. The second artwork of Mikey’s right-hand man Drakken depicts the character in a more sinister atmosphere as he’s known to be the enforcer of Toman. Drakken’s tough demeanor, stature, and Dragon tattoo are truly represented well in the horror mangaka’s art style of rough yet soft watercolors with a dark background. The splotches of red on the character’s face builds on the scary delinquent aura known throughout the series.

Mikey and Drakken’s relationship is important in Tokyo Revengers as they are the glue that keeps Toman together. Mikey’s dream to bring back the delinquents era that he saw growing up as a kid is symbolic in his illustration. Drakken’s enforcer attitude is also a likeness to his illustration as he’s the only person who can lead Mikey back on track to his dream. The Tokyo Ghoul creator did an excellent job of showing the pairings’ night and day personalities in these amazing pieces.
