New images from Top Gun: Maverick show Tom Cruise returning to action as the titular pilot. The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film is one of several Tom Cruise projects that has been derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the others being Mission: Impossible 7 and 8. Maverick was originally set to debut in the summer of 2019, though it was first pushed back to give director Joseph Kosinski more time to work on the film’s complex dogfight sequences. That delay landed the Top Gun movie right in the middle of the pandemic and Paramount has been shifting it around ever since.

Currently scheduled to release on May 27, the sequel will see Cruise reprise the role of Pete Mitchell, the naval aviator better known by his famous callsign, Maverick. Val Kilmer also returns as his old rival Iceman to go with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris, who join the cast as newcomers. Set 30 years after the first film, the sequel will find Maverick training a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late right-hand man, Goose.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Now, a brand-new look at Tom Cruise in the highly anticipated aviation sequel is here. The actor returns to action as Maverick on the cover of an upcoming issue of Total Film magazine. The first image shows him standing up in the cockpit of a fighter jet, while another puts the pilot in front of the fighter jet, staring straight ahead and sporting signature Aviator sunglasses. These two new images serve as the perfect homages to the late director Tony Scott’s original Top Gun movie from 1986, to which Cruise undoubtedly owes his reputation as an action star. The first image is improved significantly by its background — a majestic American flag-themed sunset on the horizon, playing on the first film’s themes of patriotism, which actually led to increased recruitment for the US Navy. The second still of Cruise is also heavily reminiscent of Scott’s iconic imagery from the original movie.

It remains to be seen how much interest moviegoers still have in Top Gun nearly four decades after its release. Maverick was once much more anticipated before the numerous delays seemed to suck the air out of its marketing campaign. Still, Cruise and Top Gun can be big draws, and well-timed teases like this one should begin to bring the hype back up again for when Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters this spring.
