Tom Hardy responds to fan theories saying Spider-Man villain Toxin also appears in Venom 2. The first Venom re-introduced movie audiences to the alien symbiote from the Spider-Man comics and in doing so rang up a massive $856 million at the box office.

After such a smashing success the only thing Sony could do for Venom: Let There Be Carnage was go bigger. In this case “bigger” means more Spider-Man bad guys, as Eddie Brock/Venom is set to be joined by Cletus Kasady aka Carnage (Woody Harrelson) and Frances Louise Barrison aka Shriek (Naomie Harris). But beyond those two officially revealed characters, fans think they also spotted hints of another Spider-Man villain in trailers for Venom 2. According to theories, signs point to the arrival of comic book character Patrick Mulligan, the police officer who becomes a host for the symbiote Toxin.

It would be a shock if anyone associated with Venom: Let There Be Carnage outright confirmed the appearance of Toxin after obviously wanting to be shady about it by planting hints in the trailer. Hardy did however address the question in a new interview with Esquire, and though he didn’t confirm anything, he at least provided encouragement for fans to keep on theorizing. When asked flat out about Toxin theories, Hardy according to the interviewer made hard-to-decipher hand gestures that they interpreted as the actor saying “Stay tuned.”

Toxin being a character in Venom: Let There Be Carnage would indeed represent a massive upping of the stakes for the movie as in the comics the symbiote is depicted as being more powerful even than Carnage. In fact, Toxin is spawned by Carnage, and after growing in power even takes over Eddie Brock for a time. The prospect of a wild three-way symbiote battle should make Venom fans even more excited for what Let There Be Carnage is about to unleash.

Of course there is as yet no confirmation that Toxin even appears in Venom: Let There Be Carnage (unless Hardy’s wild gesticulations somehow count). And if Toxin is in the movie, it’s yet to be seen whether the character will play a big part in the action or figure as a minor factor. It could be Toxin is only being introduced with an eye toward expanding his role in later Venom films. Whatever the case, the possibility of a bonus Spider-Man villain beyond Venom, Carnage and Shriek in Venom 2 definitely increases the intrigue factor going into the movie.

Obviously though the one character fans really want to see face off against Venom is Spider-Man himself, but unless an amazing secret is being kept, it appears that won’t happen in Venom 2. As for the possibility of Spider-Man crossing paths with Venom in a later movie, as Hardy himself might say (via mysterious hand gestures), “Stay tuned.”
