Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 2

Loki episode 2’s cliffhanger ending is explained by Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ ongoing Disney+ series continues after its premiere mostly established the premise of its story. This time, the God of Mischief officially gets into action as he helps the TVA catch his evil variant who is actually Lady Loki.

The episode, aptly titled “The Variant,” took its time building on the reveal of Loki‘s villain. After his botched plans to con Agent Mobius M. Mobius during their first time doing fieldwork together, the God of Mischief genuinely went to work in figuring out a way to nab Lady Loki. His efforts paid off when he correctly predicted where the rogue variant would be hiding — in 2050 Alabama, amidst a disastrous hurricane. After engaging in a physical and verbal tussle with the mysterious being, who took over various bodies to hide her identity, Lady Loki finally revealed herself. But before Loki even realize what’s happening, she had already executed her plan — bomb the Sacred Timeline.

In the end, Lady Loki was able to escape by going through a time portal, and surprisingly, Loki followed her, even though it’s essentially betraying the TVA and jeopardizing his future. Speaking with TV Line, Hiddleston breaks down what went into his character’s big decision and why until the very end, he was conflicted about it. Read what Hiddleston said below

Mobius is someone who, perhaps for the first time in [Loki’s] life, he thinks he might be able to trust, and perhaps trusts him, and he doesn’t want to betray that trust. But at the same time, he has to see what’s going on. He can’t help himself but follow, because it’s too strange and provokes so much curiosity within him.

For a moment, the trickster pondered what he would do during that pivotal moment in Loki episode 2. As Hiddleston pointed out, he didn’t want to betray Mobius, especially since the TVA agent had stuck his neck for him multiple times. Simply put, he would’ve already been pruned if he didn’t plead for his case. Additionally, the God of Mischief seems to have also developed an unusual bond with his unofficial partner. Loki knew that escaping like that would get Mobius in big trouble, especially with how Lady Loki blindsided all of them with her plans. That being said, it’s also in the Asgardian prince’s nature to follow his variant; after all, she did say that it’s nothing personal against him. With that, at least, he can be assured of his safety, unless he does anything to antagonize her plans. Perhaps Lady Loki even wanted Loki to follow her, seeing how the time portal didn’t immediately disappear when she stepped into it.

For now, Loki and Mobius are separated from each other, which could be disappointing for some as their banter has been one of the best aspects of the Loki show thus far. At the same time, it’s also curious what kind of dynamic the God of Mischief will have with Lady Loki, who’s clearly intrigued him. In the event that he realizes that he does need the TVA to stop the variant, at least he could keep an eye on her for the time being. This is crucial since Lady Loki is able to take over physical bodies and change appearances.
