Tom Holland celebrates the release of Uncharted with an adorable photoshoot that sees the actor befriending a puppy. Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Holland has become one of the biggest box office draws in Hollywood. Coming off the heels of his role in the hugely successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, both Holland and Sony are looking to break the box office once again with Ruben Fleischer’s Uncharted.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted video game franchise began with the release of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on PlayStation 3 in 2007. That game introduces the wise-cracking Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who travels the world embarking on perilous adventures and uncovering various historical mysteries ala Indiana Jones. Last month, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection was released, which includes remastered versions of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Due to the cinematic nature of the games, and their enduring legacy, a movie adaptation has been in the works since as early as 2008 with numerous creatives attached. For a while, Mark Wahlberg was attached to play the lead while fans have lobbied for Nathan Fillion, especially after his performance in a 2018 Uncharted fan film. Nevertheless, the ever-charismatic Holland was cast as Drake in 2017 and, following several delays, finally made his debut as the iconic character on February 18th.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As Uncharted opens in theaters, Holland took to Instagram to celebrate the film’s premiere. If there’s any surefire way to promote a film, it’s with cute dogs, and Holland took full advantage of that fact, posing with an adorable puppy to sell the movie. Check out the charming photoshoot below:

Uncharted serves as a spiritual prequel to the games and focuses on the early days of Holland’s Drake, a history buff turned bartender who meets his future mentor in Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan. It also stars Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, Antonio Banderas, and Tati Gabrielle. Despite following a younger Drake as he searches for Magellan’s lost treasure, the film incorporates aspects of the entire Uncharted franchise—from the cargo plane sequence from Uncharted 3: Drake Deception to Sam’s backstory in Uncharted 4. That being said, Fleischer has expressed interest in directing a sequel based specifically on the fourth game.

Uncharted’s ending, post-credits scenes, and Wahlberg’s mustache leave things open for future installments. However, no sequel has officially been discussed by the powers that be and possible follow-up movies would depend on the financial success of the first one. Critics certainly haven’t been kind to the film, but the opening figures for Uncharted are promising. After taking in $3.7 million from stateside Thursday night previews, the movie is already outperforming Sony’s opening weekend projections with an estimate of $45-50 million over three days. If the movie continues on this trajectory, maybe someday audiences will meet Nathan and Elena’s family pup, Vicky in a future live-action installment.
