Spider-Man star Tom Holland recently recalled a time when the producers of Spider-Man were reprimanded by his mom. In 2016, Holland became a household name in Hollywood after debuting as the MCU’s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. The actor has since gone on to star in five more films as the web-slinger, which includes Avengers: Infinity WarEndgame, and three solo films, including his latest, No Way Home. Holland’s latest Spider-Man venture was easily one of the most anticipated films of 2021, and it has taken the box office by storm, crossing the $1 billion mark, as well as setting various other box office records.

No Way Home picks up from Spider-Man: Far from Home’s ending, where J. Jonah Jameson reveals to the world that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The events that follow lead Peter Parker to ask Doctor Strange for help, but when Strange’s spell goes wrong, Spider-Man finds himself battling villains from previous Spider-Man universes thanks to the multiverse. The film has received universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and it’s the grandest of all Holland’s solo films, as it leads to his Spidey showing even greater heroics than before. Holland is now a Spider-Man veteran, but it’s easy to forget Holland was only 20 when he started in the MCU, as the star’s mom had to save the day by reprimanding the film’s producers for him during Spider-Man:Homecoming.

In an interview with Jeremy Lynch, Lynch asked the Spider-Man star a fairly popular superhero question for actors, and that was if he ever needed to go to the bathroom after being suited up for a take. After replying, “it happens all the time,” Holland recalled a rather embarrassing moment during the filming of Homecoming, where his mother had to call up the producers to ensure he gets “adequate toilet breaks.”

“[The urge to go to the bathroom while wearing the suit] it happens all the time. On the first film, I remember we did a sequence on the Washington Monument and I had to climb up and down it for like weeks on end. And basically, I didn’t go to the toilet for like 11 hours or something, and I was desperate. When you wear the harness under the suit – obviously you can’t put it over the top because you’ll see it, and because the suit is so tight you have to cinch the harness up from the get-go – it means going to the bathroom is a mission. I remember, I called my mom up, and I was like, ‘I’ve had a really hard day, I need to go to the toilet. I haven’t been to the toilet for 11 hours.'”

“Two or three days later, the producers took me aside, and they were like, ‘How are your kidneys? Your mum’s called us and told us to give you adequate toilet breaks.’ And I remember being mortified but also so grateful because I really needed to go to the bathroom and I was too scared to disrupt filming (laughs).”

The story can certainly be added to Holland’s long list of amusing Spider-Man-related stories, and while Spider-Man’s mom saving the day for her son sounds funny, her actions no-doubt benefited Holland. When one remembers that Holland was only 21 when filming Homecoming, his first solo MCU film, it’s easy to see why he was “scared” to ask for a toilet break. However, now being one of Marvel’s top stars, he amusingly mentions in the interview with Lynch that he approaches the situation differently: “Now I’m like, I’m doing a sh*t, leave me alone.” Suits and needing to go to the bathroom are common occurrences for actors in superhero films, as Christian Bale famously didn’t have a zipper for his Batsuit. Holland has also previously discussed the fear of throwing up in his suit as well.

Marvel’s Spider-Man has clearly grown accustomed to life in the superhero suit, and it appears he’ll have plenty more opportunities to don the suit. Sony and Marvel’s Spidey relationship looks set to continue as Kevin Feige has already confirmed Spider-Man 4 is in active development, and if Holland does indeed return, he could make $10 million from the fourth installment. Spider-Man: No Way Home has left Marvel with a plethora of directions they could take the character, and fans are desperate for more after the latest film. Also, Holland’s apparently made it clear that his mom is also there to save Spider-Man when he needs it.
