Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. reunite on camera for the first time since Avengers: Endgame. The actors played Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Tony Stark/Iron Man, respectively, in the MCU. Similar to their characters, the pair also developed a close relationship in real life. When Marvel Studios and Sony started their Spider-Man partnership in 2015, Holland’s version of the web-slinger debuted in the MCU via Captain America: Civil War.

Stark recruited the young hero into Team Iron Man amidst his conflict with Captain America (Chris Evans) about the Sokovia Accords. Since then, the pair developed a mentor-mentee relationship that eventually became more personal over time. But that all ended when the genius billionaire met his end in Avengers: Endgame. Stark’s death had a massive impact on Peter, as tackled in Spider-Man: Far From Home, proving how integral their relationship was to him. Admittedly, not everyone is thrilled with their pair’s closeness – some critics think that Spider-Man doesn’t need a mentor as he’s a hero on his own. But for the most part, the pair’s relationship is one of the best partnerships in the MCU.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Given their characters’ relationship on the big screen, not to mention their obvious chemistry, Downey and Holland also became good friends. But between the pandemic and Iron Man’s death in the MCU, they haven’t been spotted together since Avengers: Endgame — until now. During Holland’s hosting introduction for Venture Into Cures EB Research Fundraiser event, the actor got a surprising call from Downey. The pair had some fun back-and-forth, which was hilarious to watch. This happened around the same time director Joe Russo commented that Holland is replacing Downey in the MCU which is a fascinating coincidence. This was a planned bit for the event, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. For what it’s worth, the actors have proven time and again that they have nothing but love towards each other. Like Spider-Man in the MCU, Holland sees Downey as somewhat of a mentor to him. But in this particular clip, they sound like they’re more like friends catching up with each other after being separated for so long. It’s also fascinating to see Downey acting like Tony Stark again as he effortlessly explained what epidermolysis bullosa is. It’s reminiscent of all of the times Iron Man showed off his supreme intellect during his stint in the MCU. Ever since he retired from his superhero role, Downey seemed to have actively separated himself from the MCU. So it’s extra special seeing him act like Tony Stark again.

This is the second time Downey has made an appearance with a Marvel co-star in the last few months, albeit virtually. In mid-November, he sent a playful congratulatory message to Scarlett Johansson for becoming the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. That was also the first time that he appeared on screen with his fellow founding Avengers since both Iron Man and Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame.
