With the current National Pokedex, there are now nearly nine hundred Pokémon that players can catch and train, and out of this vast number of Pokémon, only eighty are Poison-types. From killer wasps to deadly bats, not all of the Pocket Monsters in this group are intimidating nor appear to be threatening.

Some of these Pokémon actually have their own adorable qualities that have seen them turned into cuddly toys and gotten them featured in the mainline anime series alongside the likes of Pikachu and Togepi. But what is it that has made them some of the most unexpectedly cute Pokémon throughout the games?

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Croagunk

The dual type of Poison and Fighting, Croagunk first appeared in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl. Long-time fans will have undoubtedly enjoyed recapturing the memory of their first encounter with this Pokémon in the Nintendo Switch remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl.

With its odd humanoid frog design, Croagunk certainly doesn’t bat too many eyes in its direction. But when the Toxic Mouth Pokémon joined the roster of the fighting game Pokken Tournament, its wacky moveset turned it into an endearing and funny fighter compared to the likes of Charizard and Mewtwo. By using humor, the developers helped to make Croagunk into a likable character that was able to bring a smile to anyone’s face and look past its initially odd design.

Trubbish

To this day, Trubbish is one of the oddest concepts for a Pokémon to date. Essentially a sentient bag of garbage, this Poison-type Pokémon’s evolved form, Garbodor, only turned it into a giant sentient pile of garbage instead.

But despite what it’s based on, this fifth-generation Pokémon inspired artists to create their own fanart and they showed their love and admiration for this odd little monster. From Deviant Art to Pinterest, artists were able to show this Pokémon into a cute bundle of trash online, with its big eyes and squashed facial and body features as a huge source of inspiration.

Poipole

Introduced in the last series of Pokémon games on the Nintendo 3DS, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the Poison Pin Pokémon was the latest of the other-worldly and mysterious Ultra Beasts. But unlike the others of its kind, Poipole could evolve into the rare dual poison and dragon type Naganadel.

But despite its description and evolved form, this is by far the cutest of the Pokémon Ultra Beasts. With its large expressive face and bright colorful patterns, it was no surprise to see it eventually make its way to the anime as one of Ash’s team members.

Mareanie

Introduced in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon on the Nintendo 3DS, Mareanie joined the list as the latest of the Water and Poison-type Pokémon alongside Tentacool and Qwilfish. Despite being known as the Brutal Star Pokémon, its toothy grin and colorful design certainly don’t give it an intimidating impression.

And in the Pokémon anime, the animators really honed in on these features. Caught by Team Rocket member James, it was affectionate towards him, even to the point of fantasizing about marrying the purple-headed comedic goon. James has always looked past the scary and odd Pokémon he has encountered and with its wide toothy smile alone, fans could see why he did.

Swalot

Only five new Poison-type Pokémon were made for Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire on the Game Boy Advance, and among them, Swalot could easily be the most terrifying. According to its data entry in the Pokedex, it is capable of swallowing its prey whole.

So it’s a good thing then that with its beady eyes, pursed lips, and small hands, its design contradicts this fact and makes it one of the cuter Pokémon in the third generation. While its pre-evolution, Gulpin, does have some similar features, its evolved form just beats it in terms of adorableness.

Budew

One of the many dual types of Grass and Poison types throughout the franchise, Budew was one of the new pre-evolution (or baby) Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl on the DS. One of the first Pokémon gamers would have encountered in their adventure, it undoubtedly joined many teams for those who perhaps didn’t pick the grass type Turtwig as their starter.

Despite its cute sprite in the original games, its transition to 3D with last year’s remakes for the Switch, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, just made it that much more appealing. And only evolving after making it friendly and happy, some could say that they grew attached to the smiling bud along their journey.

Toxel

The most recent Pokémon on the list, Toxel was one of the gift Pokémon that trainers could obtain in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield on the Nintendo Switch. Known as the Baby Pokémon, this was the first Poison and Electric dual-type to be introduced and would eventually evolve into the rock n’ roll inspired Toxtricity, who also had an intimidating Gigantimax form to boot.

Its baby-like features with a purple diaper, large eyes, and flappy arms certainly didn’t make it the toughest of monsters to catch. But in the camp feature, seeing it crawling, playing with the toys on offer, and enjoying the curries players could cook for it was adorable. Hopefully, it will make its debut in Pokémon Journeys soon and join Ash and Goh on their adventures.

Vileplume

One of the first Poison-type Pokémon that players could get in the Kanto region, Vileplume is one of two evolved forms of Gloom. Known as the Flower Pokémon, poisonous pollen spreads from its large petals with every step it takes.

Based on the gigantic and deadly Rafflesia plant, somehow the people at GameFreak were able to turn it into a cute sentient being. With its colourful red petals, beady eyes, continuous smile, and small body features, it’s undoubtedly as cute as its pre-evolved form, Oddish.

Alolan Grimer

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, GameFreak introduced Alolan variants, a change of design and types from the older generation of Pokémon and gave them a fun, fresh spin. While there were many cuties with Alolan Raichu and Alolan Vulpix, there were some that weren’t quite given the same coat of paint.

Alolan Grimer was one of them. While it does bear some similar features to its Kanto variant, Alolan Grimer features more color and facial features. Sporting a green, slimy body with a yellow goatee and two big teeth, the designers were able to make the Sludge Pokémon cuter.

Bulbasaur

The first Pokémon in the Pokedex and the first Grass-type starter in the series, Bulbasaur is also one of the first of many Poison-type Pokémon that was introduced in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue back on the Game Boy in the 90s. But this particular Pokémon would go on to be one of the most popular, appearing multiple times in future entries, being one of many that Ash would catch in the anime series and even coming to life in the feature film Detective Pikachu.

Unquestionably one of the most recognizable and arguably the best Grass starter Pokémon across the entire series, Bulbasaur is also one of the most adorable Poison-types too. Its large eyes and wide smile made it instantly appealing to pick for those starting their adventures in the Kanto region. And with it looking like a dinosaur and plant hybrid, it was visually striking too. Charmander may have been the go-to in the original games, but Bulbasaur certainly had a dedicated fanbase.
