Jon Bernthal is an engaging and versatile actor both on the small screen and the silver screen. He had a few film roles before being cast in the hit show that launched countless zombie shows like The Walking Dead. He had a starring role in the first two seasons of the show and then was able to move onto starring and supporting roles in movies, but went back to the series format when he was cast as Frank Castle in Netflix’s Punisher.

10 Sicario (2015) – 7.6

This intense crime drama follows an FBI agent (Emily Blunt) recently recruited to a secret task force run by a secretive government figure (Josh Brolin) whose main mission to take down drug cartels and focus on the U.S./Mexico border.

Another part of the team is the mysterious non-government lawyer turned hitman (Benicio del Toro). The movie is an engaging slow burn and although Jon Bernthal only has a small role it’s definitely worth a watch!

9 Baby Driver (2017) – 7.6

This movie follows Baby (Ansel Elgort) that was blackmailed into being a getaway driver after a grand theft auto charge when he was young. The action-adventure carefully chooses its music and edits the entire film to fit the soundtrack as it’s important to the main character because of his tinnitus.

Jon Bernthal has a small role at the beginning of the film as one of the members of the first heist. Even though he’s not in it long he still has a memorable role in a great movie.

8 Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) – 7.7

This dramatic rom-com follows a high schooler who spends most of his time recreating classic movies with his one close friend. His world changes, however, when he befriends another classmate who has recently been diagnosed with cancer.

Jon Bernthal plays a small role as one of their teachers who has an engaging aesthetic and approach to teaching. It’s a great coming of age movie with a lot of dramatic weight added to a typical story.

7 Wind River (2017) – 7.7

This movie follows an FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) investigating a murder on a Native American reservation in Wyoming with the help of a seasoned hunter (Jeremy Renner) who found the body and knows the intricacies of the community.

The location and scenery are spellbinding and gives a real sense of isolation that makes the case more difficult to solve. Although Jon Bernthal doesn’t have too big of a role in this movie, it’s gotten great reviews and is worth a watch.

6 The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) – 7.7

This movie follows the journey of a man with down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen) who runs away from the nursing home he’s living in to live out his dream of becoming a wrestler. As he begins his journey he meets a criminal on the run (Shia LaBeouf) and he becomes an unlikely friend and coach to the young man.

Together they avoid capture and form a strong connection on their journey. An emotional and heartfelt story, this movie has great reviews and is definitely worth checking out!

5 Ford v Ferrari (2019) – 8.1

This movie, based on a true story, follows two men (Christian Bale and Matt Damon) as they attempt to design a Ford car and race it to beat a Ferrari vehicle on a racing course. Jon Bernthal has a pretty significant role as the VP of Henry Ford Motor Company that is the catalyst for the entire idea in the first place.

The movie was a surprise hit delighting fans and critics alike and was even nominated for a few Academy Awards.

4 The Walking Dead (2010-) – 8.2

He showed his acting chops as the character’s arc went from best friend to jealous lover to villain. He was an engaging part of the show that is memorable as part of the beginnings of the show that allowed him to continue onto bigger and better roles.

3 The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – 8.2

This movie is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) that follows his life of becoming a stockbroker on wall street to white-collar crime, fraud, and eventual downfall. While being a movie about a serious and true topic, the film has a lot of fun and comedic moments throughout its entirety.

Jon Bernthal has a small but memorable role in the series as he helps Jordan Belfort when he begins some less than legal actions. The film has received wide acclaim from critics and fans alike and has great reviews.

2 Punisher (2017-2019) – 8.5

This Marvel Netflix show follows anti-hero Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) as he tries to avenge his family that was taken from him. Castle doesn’t have any superpowers like other Marvel protagonists but is a highly-skilled fighter. Bernthal leads the cast with a gruff voice and a serious swagger with skilled and engaging fight choreography to back it up.

It’s a more serious, violent, and gritter show than most Marvel films, but it follows suit with other Marvel Netflix shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones that do have a more intense approach. It’s an engaging show with a lot of Jon Bernthal, definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already.

1 Daredevil (2015-2018) – 8.6

This Marvel Netflix show follows lawyer by day Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and vigilante by night. Unlike Frank Castle, Murdock does have superpowers. After an accident left him blind when he was younger he found that his other senses were heightened and he trained to utilize this ability for good. This show’s second season introduces Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle before the Punisher series started.

Daredevil and Punisher have a similar vibe and it makes sense that the characters from Punisher show up in Daredevil and vice versa. Although Bernthal is only in the second season, the show is worth checking out if you’re a fan of Punisher.
