A new Top Gun: Maverick trailer arrives offering a deeper look at the special mission the titular hero is training for and the return of Val Kilmer. Picking up 30 years after its predecessor, the film once again centers on test pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he is enlisted by the military to train a new group of Top Gun graduates for a unique mission that will push them all to their limits. Maverick will be forced to not only confront his own abilities and aging but also the ghosts of his past as one of the younger pilots is Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, his late friend Goose’s son.

Tom Cruise is once again leading the cast of Top Gun: Maverick alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer, the latter of whom is reprising his role as Iceman from the original film. Development on a Top Gun sequel has languished in hell for over a decade, only finally getting off the ground when Peter Craig and Justin Marks were brought on to develop the story while Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Mission: Impossible‘s Christopher McQuarrie penned the script and Oblivion‘s Joseph Kosinski was tapped to helm. After multiple delays, Top Gun: Maverick is gearing up to hit theaters in May and now audiences are getting an exciting new look at the upcoming sequel.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

With two months remaining until the film’s release, Paramount Pictures has released a new Top Gun: Maverick trailer. The video offers better insight into the return of Cruise’s titular character and the special mission he is training for, as well as the first tease of Val Kilmer’s Iceman return. Portrayed by Anthony Edwards in the original Top Gun, Goose was Maverick’s Radar Intercept Officer who was killed when Maverick tried to press on with an A-4 training chase and subsequently suffered a flameout in his jet engines, with the two ejecting but Goose crashes head-first into the jettisoned aircraft canopy. When it was announced that Miles Teller would be portraying Goose’s son for Top Gun: Maverick, interest was immediately piqued by fans of the original film for what the dynamic would be between the two characters given it was Maverick’s actions that resulted in his father’s death. The new Top Gun: Maverick trailer points towards there being a heated relationship between the two throughout the sequel as Rooster is forced to have to try and trust Maverick.

The other major takeaway from the new Top Gun: Maverick trailer is the first look at Kilmer’s return as Iceman for the upcoming sequel. Director Joseph Kosinski has confirmed that Iceman and Maverick will get the chance to reunite in the film, with the new trailer indicating Maverick was recruited for the specialized mission due to his prior relationship with Kilmer’s character, though with both the new and prior trailers also seeing a teary-eyed Maverick attending a funeral, the question now rises as to if the dead person in question is that of Iceman. Only time will tell when Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27.
