Whenever audiences watch a movie, typically they’ll connect and fall in love with the main characters due to their charisma or comedic timing. Of course, sometimes, lesser characters steal the spotlight, with the viewer falling in love with quotes and comedy done by side characters.

In the hit series Toy Story, a beloved franchise that makes up some of Pixar’s best films, the comedy belongs to a variety of side characters that have led to some hilarious memes from the franchise, chief among them being Mr & Mrs.Potato Head. Anytime the loving couple is on screen, either together or separately, they always find a new laughable quote to make the audience side ache.

10 “Gee, I’d better shave!”

Everyone remembers the first time they met someone, how much they wanted to leave a lasting impression on another, and how they truly wanted to be with them forever. Now, imagine how a toy like Mr. Potato Head would react when he hears that Andy’s sister got a Mrs. Potato Head at the end of the first Toy Story that’s regarded as one of the 90s best-animated films.

Overcome with joy, Mr.Potato Head proclaims “Gee, I’d better shave!” before pulling his plastic mustache off. Honestly, it seems pretty convenient, and we’re betting some guys out there wish it were so easy.

9 “Oh, it’s so nice to have a big, strong spud around the house.”

At the end of the day, Mr & Mrs. Potato Head are a couple and as such, the way that they get along with one another shows through in incredibly comedic and often ironic ways given that they’re… well… toy potatoes.

So, while audiences and viewers may greet their loved ones by saying how strong they are, it’s only natural that the Potato Heads call each one another spuds. Something so mundane and simple ends up becoming comedic when coming from the plastic lips of potato and toy.

8 “Hey Hamm, look. I’m Picasso!”

Part of what always made a Mr. Potato Head so much fun to play with was his customizable nature. Kids always have—and still do—enjoyed mismatching and messing around with the Potato’s face and making it as weird as it could be.

Toy Story leans into that heavily with Mr. Potato Head and shows it off in all its glory with this awesome quote, which is done in a way that harkens back to the days of old and showcases the great late Don Rickles’ comedic genius.

7 “Remember all the bad things I said about Andy’s attic? I take it all back.”

Toy Story 3 is commonly considered one of the most starkly depressing films from Pixar, with the traumatic near-death experience scene toward the end of the movie proving to be a marked low point. However, Mr. Potato Head did manage to inject a small amount of levity into the occasion with this admittedly out-of-place quip.

6 “Don’t talk to any toys you don’t know!”

Kids have the idea of “stranger danger” pretty thoroughly hammered into their heads. Whether it was by some guy in a school gym talking “street smarts” or just a parent kneeling down and calmly explaining why kids can’t get into the nice man’s van, stranger danger applies to toys, too.

Heading off on a journey to find and rescue Woody in Toy Story 2 is already perilous enough. Of course, Mrs. Potato Head hits the point home by reminding the heroes of stranger danger as they venture into the unknown.

5 “We’re not preschool toys, Slink, we can read!”

It’s amazing how good the Toy Story series is, especially being one of the greatest films to be based on real-life toys, that sometimes, viewers forget that they’re even watching toys. The three-dimensional characteristics and actions that they carry out are so well-done that it’s easy to forget that, to quote Woody, “they are a CHILDS PLAYTHING!”

Even when reminding audiences that they are toys, such as when Potato Head chastises Slink for reading a box out loud, it’s still difficult to discern character from the toys, even with the quipy and enjoyable insult flung at Slink.

4 “I’m packing you an extra pair of shoes and your angry eyes, just in case.”

Again, the amount of accessories and add ons that come with Potato Heads is astounding. From hats to eyes to even a Darth Vader helmet, the addons are never-ending, and, as such, were sure to bring about a joke at one point.

As the gang prepares to venture out into the world to go find Woody, Ms. Potato Head readies her husband by shoving as many accessories, and a barrel of monkeys, into the compartment in his back, even adding in a pair of angry eyes. Just in case.

3 “Prepare to meet Mr. Angry eyes!”

Usually, when a character says they’re doing something just in case, it typically means it will come into play later in the story. It was no surprise then that when the gang found Woody in Al’s apartment, the angry eyes came out.

Or, at least, they tried to come out. As the fight for Woody raged on, Mr. Potato Head reached behind him, trying to pull out his angry eyes… and instead put a pair of shoes where his eyes should’ve been and ran into a wall. What a hero.

2 “You saved their lives? Oh, my hero! And they’re so adorable! Let’s adopt them!”

Sometimes kids in movies can be great. Other times, they can be monsters, and, a few times, they can end up being little green men who pledge their allegiances to their “savior” in an increasingly annoying fashion.

After rescuing a trio of aliens from flying out a window, Mr. Potato Head found himself becoming a reluctant father to them. A situation that was made even worse when the Missuses gleefully announced they would adopt the aliens, dooming the Mister to a life of fatherhood.

1 “You saved our lives! And WE are eternally grateful!”

One good act always deserves another. Toy Story is full of these moments, with Woody and Buzz making up and helping one another to other toys repaying debts. As such, it was only a matter of time before that trio of aliens paid back a debt of their own.

Following the gang’s close call in the dumpster fire, the aliens saved them all in the nick of time with the claw and allowed Toy Story 3 to have one of Disney’s greatest movie endings instead of a depressing one. Impressed, Mr & Mrs. Potato Head joyfully said that they were eternally grateful in a funny yet poignant scene.
