Tragedy Of Macbeth Trailer Is Shakespeare Meets Horror Movies

A new trailer for Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth is like Shakespeare meets horror movies. Coen wrote and directed the black and white film, which recounts one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The film features an all-star cast, including Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, and Brendan Gleeson

Coen has typically been part of the duo known as The Coen Brothers, having directed multiple high-profile projects over the years with his brother, Ethan, including Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading and many more. Ethan Coen was apparently not interested in being involved with The Tragedy of Macbeth and Joel recently commented that the two never set out to be co-directors, even though it lasted for over 35 years. “We just thought we should do some different things for a while,” said Coen of the decision to direct solo, which came for him on The Tragedy of Macbeth.

A new trailer for The Tragedy of Macbeth was released by Apple TV+ today, which highlights a dark and violent Shakespeare-meets-horror tale. Washington plays the titular role, with McDormand playing his wife, Lady Macbeth, as the two conspire to seize power over the kingdom after being seduced by a trio of witches that foretell his destiny. The classic tale of lust, betrayal, greed, murder, and revenge is told in black and white, brought to life by French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. Check out the trailer below:

Macbeth has been adapted numerous times since it was originally written in the 1600s, with all manner of big-name actors from century to century tackling the tragic play. Laurence Olivier, Ian McKellen, Antony Sher, and Charlton Heston have all famously tackled the role for theater. Numerous filmed versions have taken shape since cinema began, including takes from Roman Polanski, Orson Welles, and Akira Kurosawa. Most recently, Justin Kurzel directed a stylish version of Macbeth in 2015 starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

While Coen is acting alone in directing The Tragedy of Macbeth, the style and vision appear to be intact. Stylish, sharp, and a strong creative vision lead the way for the film, which exudes a dark, violent and twisty nature, befitting of the source material.
