Katrina Bowden, star of Eli Craig’s Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, talks about the possibility of a sequel to the much-loved comedy-horror film. A parody of the “hillbilly horror” genre, which includes films like The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil was written by Craig and Morgan Jurgenson and was released in 2010. Despite earning modest returns at the box office, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil has remained highly popular with fans over the past decade and is now considered something of a cult classic.

Like many other horror films, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil begins with a group of college kids setting out on a camping trip in the woods, but that’s where the similarities end. On their way to the woods, the college kids encounter Tucker and Dale (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine), two socially awkward country boys who are also heading to the woods to fix up their run-down cabin. In a play on the long-standing conventions of “hillbilly horror” films, a series of misunderstandings (coupled with their own prejudices) leads the college kids to believe that the well-intentioned and harmless Tucker and Dale are in fact violent and dangerous. When they mistakenly think the two men have kidnapped one of their own (Allison, played by Bowden), they attempt to rescue her with ridiculous and bloody results.

Since the film’s initial release, fans have speculated about the possibility of a sequel to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and there have been rumors for years that one was in the works. In a new interview with ComicBook, Bowden weighs in on the possibility. Bowden, who recently appeared in martial arts drama Born a Champion, reveals that while she currently has no news to share about a potential Tucker & Dale sequel, and isn’t sure what one would look like, she “would be very pleased” were it to happen. Read her remarks below:

“There was definitely talk of it, especially when it first came out, which was quite a while ago. Now at this point, I mean, I don’t have any news. Do I think it could happen? It could, but it has been a long time. It would have to be the thing where it’s like, flash forward 15 years and where are the characters now? And, I also will say, it would be so cool to do a follow-up on that movie but there is something really, really nice about not messing with something that turned out so good.

So I would be very pleased if we were to do something, like a sequel of some kind with it. But I would be equally pleased that the movie lives on in all of its glory as it was. And, as for Allison, I mean, I don’t know. I would like to believe that her and Dale lived, maybe, happily ever after with some things going wrong, but I would like to think that they were still together.”

Bowden goes on to discuss other types of horror films she’d be interested in making, referencing creepy, intense, thrilling horror” like Midsommar and Get Out, as well as “a reboot of one of those [big horror] franchises” like Friday the 13th. It seems she’s already crossed the survival horror genre off her list, as she will next be seen onscreen in Great White, about a group of tourists stranded in dangerous waters.

Based on Bowden’s comments, there aren’t currently any plans in the works for a Tucker & Dale vs. Evil sequel film, but that doesn’t mean there’s no future for the misunderstood pals. Though the cast and crew have moved onto other projects – Craig is reportedly directing horror rom-com The Hills Have Eyes For You for Netflix, and Tudyk’s new series Resident Alien was recently renewed for a second season – previous comments from Tudyk and Labine have indicated that the story may continue in some form. Of course, Bowden may be correct in suggesting that it’s better for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil to remain “in all of its glory as it was.” If fans don’t respond as positively to a sequel, whatever form it takes, it could tarnish the legacy of the original, and the last thing Tucker and Dale need is to have their reputation maligned again.
