HBO Max is developing two more animated Game of Thrones spinoff shows. HBO found great success in the last decade adapting George R.R. Martin’s wildly popular fantasy novels. It became one of the biggest shows on television during its eight-season run. The Game of Thrones finale might have divided viewers, but it hasn’t stopped HBO from wanting to continue exploring the world.

HBO is developing multiple shows in this universe that will expand the Game of Thrones mythology. The only show confirmed to be happening is the live-action Targaryan-focused prequel, House of the Dragon. That show takes place 300 years prior to the main Game of Thrones story and is expected to debut on HBO in 2022. HBO and HBO Max are also developing close to a half dozen other live-action and animated shows. Now, more animated properties appear to be in the works.

According to THR, HBO Max is developing two more animated Game of Thrones shows. A third Game of Thrones-inspired animated series was previously revealed to be in consideration at the start of 2021. HBO Max has not confirmed any details about the two newest projects in development. According to THR‘s sources, one of these three shows is based around the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.

The Golden Empire of Yi Ti is inspired by Imperial China and is believed to be one the oldest and most powerful empires in Game of Thrones. The empire dominates the Further East of Essos and emerged from the fall of the Great Empire of the Dawn after the Long Night. Yi Ti wasn’t visited in Game of Thrones, but an Easter egg in season 7 of The World of Ice & Fire did reference the location. Season 5 also potentially featured a Red Priestess (pictured above) from the Golden Empire. It could have connections to House of the Dragon too since Lord Corlys Velaryon famously sailed to the Golden Empire in the source material. If that history is established in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, then this could be how HBO gets general audiences familiar with Yi Ti before releasing an entire series about them.

There is no guarantee that HBO Max will make any of these three animated Game of Thrones shows though. HBO knows how precious the IP is and they have shown a willingness to reshoot pilots and not move forward with shows that aren’t strong enough. Still, it is clear that HBO Max wants at least one Game of Thrones animated show in the near future. Even if none of the current three shows materialize, it seems like a safe bet that an animated Game of Thrones series will eventually head to HBO Max.
