Before Idris Elba became well-known in the MCU and in the Fast & Furious franchise, he had a lead role in a Tyler Perry movie. Daddy’s Little Girls had Elba as the kind, hard-working mechanic and male lead. The movie’s story is heartwarming to watch.

Acrimony received overall negative reviews when it premiered in 2018, but its storyline is complex, dark, and a decent psychological thriller. The movie’s story is divided into parts based on the female characters’ emotional experiences, as follows: Acrimony, Sunder, Bewail, Deranged, and Inexorable.

Melinda (Taraji P. Henson) bumps into a young man during college, and despite their physical altercation, they start dating. Melinda starts showing violent tendencies when she catches him cheating, but they still marry. As their story progresses and he hopes to invent a new type of battery, he remains unfaithful. Melinda starts to give in to her anger and files for divorce, but her vengeance doesn’t end there.

6 A Fall From Grace (2020): 5.9

Don’t worry that A Fall From Grace is a two-hour long movie. The Netflix thriller by Tyler Perry has a chilling story about being wrongfully accused of murder. In the film, a public defender is given a new case that includes a simple plea deal, but she believes that there’s something missing and her client to be innocent.

Despite the backlash, she takes it to court and fails to prove her client’s innocence of murdering her husband. But behind the crime is an even deeper and more chilling story of a cover-up and a ruthless criminal. Perry also makes an appearance in the movie as a supporting character.

5 Why Did I Get Married (2007): 5.9

Why Did I Get Married? is one of Perry’s more typical movies when it comes to his on-screen work. He not only directed and wrote the film, but also starred as one of the main characters. In the movie, three married couples are long time friends and have been through it all together. It’s that time of year when they take their annual retreat to the mountains.

Their getaway opens up a can of worms surrounding their deteriorating marriages and their personal struggles. An always bickering couple can’t see each other for the good, one can’t seem to stay faithful and the other puts on a facade, when in reality, they’ve been broken for years. The story follows the couples as they try to make it work and move on.

4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows (2016): 6

The live-action movie about the fictional superheroes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has Perry in a supporting role. It was part of the rebooted series that continued the story of the ninja turtles after they defeated the Shredder (Brian Tee). In this movie, he’s back and is helped by scientist Baxter Stockman (Perry).

Stockham uses the mutagen of an alien warlord to turn Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly) into a warthog and a rhinoceros. They become the Shredder’s muscled and dangerous minions and it’s up to the Ninja Turtles to stop his evil plan once again. Perry did well in the role as a nerdy scientist amongst a gang of villains.

3 The Haves And The Have Nots (2013 – 2021): 6

Tyler Perry’s show is a blend of a soap opera and a crime drama and it has the best of both worlds when it comes to its intrigue, suspense and extreme drama. Perry based the show’s story on his play of the same name from 2011.

It focuses on two upper-class families (The Haves) and the lower-class Young family (The Have Nots), in Savannah, Georgia. Behind the rich, elegant and powerful mask of the families is secrets, lies and problems. Their double lives threaten their livelihood and they will do whatever it takes to stay on top. Interwoven amongst all this are the Young family’s hidden secrets.

2 For Colored Girls (2010): 6.1

For Colored Girls was an adapted drama by Tyler Perry from Ntozake Shange’s 1975 original choreopoem. The movie journies through the struggles and lives of a group of Black women. What made the movie and original source material so intriguing are the character’s stories.

Many might not remember that the hit psychological thriller, Gone Girl also had Tyler Perry in a supporting role. He played Nick Dunne’s (Ben Affleck) attorney, Tanner Bolt. It’s not as surprising, as many of Perry’s roles involve some form of a legal character. In his Madea movies, he also plays a state attorney.

The movie became well known for its mind-boggling twists and turns in the storyline. Nick’s wife goes missing and everyone assumes he had something to do with it, as his secrets get unveiled. But he starts to realize that his wife had even more skeletons in her closet than he ever imagined.
