Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are gaining traction in various facets of the internet, but Ubisoft’s video announcement of NFT integration with Ghost Recon Breakpoint, named Ubisoft Quartz, doesn’t seem to have many fans judging by its dislike ratio. Comments on the video are largely negative, with many saying Ubisoft’s news made them miss the dislike button. Even though YouTube removed the dislike button last month, there are ways around it, and a look at the announcement video’s ratio is not great for Ubisoft.

While many rush to embrace NFTs as the next big currency craze, others take a more conservative view, waiting see how the new space develops. Many who’ve gotten into the NFT scene swear by its revolutionary concept and moneymaking potential, but while NFTs may be big in the digital art world, they’ve been highly controversial in other areas. Many see NFTs as a quick cash grab, coming at the expense of the gamers themselves, as well as potentially being detrimental to the environment. The Dead by Daylight dev team ran afoul of their community when Dead by Daylight announced a Hellraiser NFT, and other companies have faced similar backlash.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Ghost Recon Breakpoint NFT game announcement video from Ubisoft has only been up for a matter of hours at the time of writing, but Kotaku reports that it’s been very poorly received with a 96% dislike ratio. Even with dislike button removed from YouTube, workarounds have allowed gamers to make their opinions known by revealing numbers through plug-ins and more. At the time of Kotaku’s report, the video has 1,000 likes compared to 24,000 dislikes, demonstrating the audience isn’t happy with the NFT news. This may in part be due to Ubisoft claiming no liability whatsoever should things go awry. While the impact of NFTs in video games is still being debated, public opinion on them in gaming seems to trend toward the negative, and at the time of writing, the video is now unlisted.

Many gamers have taken to the video comments section to further voice their concerns beyond disliking the announcment. Some have argued that no one asked for NFTs in gaming, and many criticized Ubisoft as a company, calling it out its games and products. Taking this in hand with the massive dislike ratio, it seems that the majority of Ubisoft’s audience—or at least, those who watched the video—aren’t happy with the company capitalizing on NFTs. Perhaps when Ubisoft Quartz launches, gamers will take to the products, but for now, public opinion is overwhelmingly negative.

This isn’t the first controversy or backlash Ubisoft has faced this year. Just last month, employees launched a petition to improve Ubisoft working conditions at the company in light of recent sexual harassment and abuse allegations. It’s not yet clear what Ubisoft’s next steps will be for either its NFT backlash, or its internal company allegations, but it seems that its fanbase isn’t happy.
