Not every game is lucky enough to be re-released or upgraded for modern audiences. However, thanks to the modding community, the two-decade-old Rainbow Six series now has an “Ultimate Edition” that includes over fifty missions from several games. The original Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six was released in 1998, and the series continues to this day, with the most recent Rainbow Six Seige in 2015. This mod, Rainbow Six: Black Ops 2.0, created by modder Menrva, combines missions from Rainbow Six games and their expansions from 1998 to 2001.

The missions included in the mod come from the original Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, the expansions for those games, as well as Rainbow Six: Take Down – Missions in Korea, which was previously only released in South Korea. Those missions, which only featured Korean text, have been translated to English for the first time. This mod also comes at a time when these old Rainbow Six games are not available from any official seller, which means this is likely one of the only reliable ways to experience these classic games. The branding of Tom Clancy and Rainbow Six has changed a lot over the years, with recent titles taking on modern trends, leaving the classic single-player story-based experience in the dust.

This mod functions as a total conversion of Rogue Spear’s second stand-alone expansion, Black Thorn, just a few months before the game’s twentieth anniversary. Menrva told Eurogamer that this mod is in a “grey area” because it is a stand-alone mod, meaning players do not need to own any of the original games for it to function. Menrva even went on to say that they would “like to implement some checks requiring users to own at least one of the Rogue Spear games,” but without any official sites selling the games, it doesn’t seem possible for now.

Rainbow Six: Black Ops 2.0 gets the number at the end of its name from the community it is built upon. Finding a way to bring realism back to Rainbow Six could end up being just the distinguishing factor the series needs right now. Menrva makes sure to give credit to another modder, HardcoreHacker, for creating the first mission compilation mod in 2014, what would now be called the 1.0 version. Thanks also went out to several others for various assistance in the process. It is thanks to dedicated fans, a thriving community, and years of hard work that mods like this are possible. With an exciting new addition to the series, Rainbow Six Extraction, set to arrive in January, Ubisoft might not realize they are missing out on the opportunity to capitalize on a fan base that enjoys the older games in the series.

Menrva released a video preview of Rainbow Six: Black Ops 2.0, showing off gameplay as well as all of the available player options, from appearance to weapon choices. With tons of customizable options and fifty-six total missions, there is certainly a lot to experience as either a faithful fan of the series or a brand new player. Of course, the widespread issue of microtransactions cannot find its way into this Rainbow Six fan-made mod, thus, everything from weapons to the various missions themselves is unlocked from the very beginning. Until any sort of official re-release, if that ever happens, fans will surely be glad to have access to this “ultimate” version of decades-old titles.
