While fans eagerly wait for the second season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, Dark Horse Comics is releasing a prequel comic series about Klaus, aka Séance. Created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the original comic limited series, The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite was released in late 2007 and early 2008. It’s been very popular with both critics and readers, and it won the esteemed Eisner Award in 2008. Since then, two more series following the same characters have come out between 2008 and 2018, with a fourth set to release in 2020.

The series revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted superhero siblings, who, after their father’s death, must come together to save the world from an apocalypse. While originally there was word of a movie adaptation, it was announced in 2017 that Netflix would be adapting the popular comic book series as a television series. Created by Steve Blackman (Altered Carbon) and Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist), the cast includes Ellen Page (Juno), Tom Hopper (Black Sails), Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) and Mary J. Blige, among others. The first season premiered on the streamer on February 15, 2019 to great success, and in April 2019 Netflix renewed it for a second season.

The news of the upcoming prequel series comes directly from Dark Horse Comics, announced via The New York Times. Before both the second season of the television series and the fourth volume of the main comic series are released, Dark Horse Comics is releasing “You Look Like Death,” a six issue mini-series centered on Klaus Hargreeves, played by Robert Sheehan (Misfits) in the Netflix adaptation. The mini-series will be written by Umbrella Academy creator Gerard Way and Shaun Simon, with interior artwork by I.N.J. Culbard and lettering by Nate Piekos. “You Look Like Death” will join “Hazel and Cha-Cha Save Christmas,” a one-shot issue published last year, as another Tales from the Umbrella Academy spin-off story. Check out the official description as well as the first issue’s cover by Gabriel Bá, below:

Roughly ten years before the events of Apocalypse Suite, 18-year-old Séance gets himself kicked out of the Umbrella Academy. With his allowance discontinued by Hargreeves, he takes to a place where his ghoulish talents will be appreciated––Hollywood. After a magical high on a vampire-drug-lord’s stash, Klaus needs help, and doesn’t have his siblings there to save him.

There have been many great Umbrella Academy theories to come out of the wait for season 2, but people are eager to know more about the Hargreeves family. Dark Horse Comics is thankfully giving fans something to tide them over, with a story focusing on fan-favorite Klaus. Klaus is also known as Séance as his powers relate to necromancy, meaning he can see and talk to the dead. It’s possible that this story will be referenced or even shown in some way on the television show, as TheUmbrella Academy comics and Netflix show have been influencing each other. For example, the most recent volume, “Hotel Oblivion”, finally brings Ben into the story, a character who has only been mentioned in the comics but is another fan-favorite due to his expanded role on the show.

So far there is no set release date for The Umbrella Academy season 2,  but it’s believed to be coming out later this year. The second season will be 10 episodes long and continue the story from where season 1 left off, with the Hargreeves siblings transported to some other point in time. Netflix recently released the first Umbrella Academy season 2 posters. The first issue of the upcoming comic series “You Look Like Death” will be published on June 17, 2020, and hopefully season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will follow soon after.
