Warning! Spoilers ahead for Uncharted!

While Uncharted is doing very well at the box office, it continues one of Sony’s worst trends frequently seen with its Spider-Man films. Naturally, most studios are very secretive leading up to the release of their films, and this extends to their marketing where great efforts are made with trailers and promotions to not reveal too much before viewers see the actual film in theaters. However, Sony consistently does something strange that can be quite frustrating, most often seen with their various Spider-Verse films—and now with Uncharted.

In Uncharted, young Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) goes on his first treasure hunting expedition, recruited by Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). Searching for the lost treasure of Ferdinand Magellan, Drake and Sully learn how to work together as partners along with Chole Fraser (Sophia Ali). Essentially a prequel before the actual timeline of the Uncharted video games the film is based on, viewers see Nathan come into his own as the film progresses, even adding his signature shoulder gun belt in the final conflict against rival hunters. Likewise, the film’s post-credits scene sees Sully gaining his iconic mustache, indicating that some time has passed and that he and Drake have remained partners.

Unfortunately, the only problem is that Uncharted’s reveal of Sully’s mustache (and even the fate of his new cat) was featured in the film’s marketing. As such, it ends up creating dissatisfaction seeing as how the final scene was already spoiled as something that’s already been seen before in trailers and promos. Sony is notorious for doing this for many of their films, especially their blockbuster Spider-Verse movies. Some of the most notable include Spider-Man’s battle with Rhino in Amazing Spider-Man 2, Eddie Brock and his symbiote’s “We are Venom” scene in the convenience store from the first Venom, Miles Morales’ closing monologue being released 4 days before Into the Spider-Verse‘s release, as well as Spider-Man and MJ swinging through New York during the final and post-credits scenes of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

It should be noted that Spider-Man: No Way Home’s trailers are a notable exception, though it makes sense that Sony didn’t put the film’s final or post-credits scene in their trailer as it would no doubt spoil major parts of the entire film. Likewise, the extremely high anticipation practically guaranteed an incredible box office performance. Sony likely felt more comfortable making their No Way Home trailers and promotions more secretive as opposed to their typical marketing strategies. However, that doesn’t excuse the fact that they revealed such iconic moments for characters such as Miles Morales and Venom in trailers and promos, spoiling the culmination of their respective journeys.

Unfortunately, viewers knew Sully’s mustache was coming in Uncharted, only for it to be saved for the very last scene. While seemingly small, the mustache represents Mark Wahlberg’s character becoming the one fans know from the games. Fans now have to wait to see more of that Sully in future films that will potentially be produced. It’s the same kind of dissatisfaction created by Spider-Man’s battle with Rhino teased in trailers for Amazing Spider-Man 2, only for that shot to be the final scene, with the actual battle not being a part of the film at all. While one can hope that Sony will end this trend following Uncharted, it seems highly doubtful at this point.
