This weekend will bring some major Walking Dead news, but producer Scott M. Gimple warns fans it will not be about the long-awaited Rick Grimes movies. When The Walking Dead first hit the small screen in 2010, Andrew Lincoln’s Rick was the face of the series. Audiences were introduced to the zombie apocalypse right alongside him as he woke up alone in a hospital, and for the next 9 seasons, Rick led The Walking Dead‘s large ensemble through countless conflicts and tragedies. That was why, when Lincoln announced his departure in 2018, fans were stunned and disappointed.

To ease the sting of his exit, it was quickly revealed that Lincoln would lead his own Walking Dead movie trilogy. The films are expected to reveal what happened to Rick following his helicopter rescue in season 9. However, despite immense fan interest in Rick’s trilogy, very few developments have emerged. The coronavirus pandemic has almost certainly led to further delays, but even before that set in, the Walking Dead franchise seemed more focused on its various spin-offs. Back in July, director Greg Nicotero said the Rick Grimes movies are still happening, but that he doesn’t know when they will get started.

A recent post from Walking Dead producer Scott M. Gimple seemed to hint a major update was arriving soon, but now he’s cautioned eager fans. The next episode of after-show Talking Dead, which will air on Sunday, December 5, will feature a surprise guest. Gimple teased said guest’s arrival earlier this week on social media, writing, “This will be BIG.” Naturally, many assumed this had to do with the Rick movies. However, Gimple later returned to social media to dash those hopes. “It’s big, but it’s not about Rick Grimes,” he wrote. “We’re sorry some things are taking a while — this announcement is something, though, that’s been a long time coming.”

Gimple then went on to thank fans in an additional tweet for their patience. He also said that Sunday’s Walking Dead news “will be massive and momentous.” That’s a lot of hype for something that evidently isn’t about the thing fans most want to hear about. It could be that there will be a major announcement pertaining to one of the in-development Walking Dead spin-offs, such as Tales of the Walking Dead or the Carol and Daryl show. It could also be about the final season of The Walking Dead itself, which is currently on hiatus after airing the first of three parts this fall.

Still, it’s a bit of a blow that there won’t be any developments on the Rick Grimes front this Sunday. The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd said in August the movies are taking so long because they have to capture both the epic scope of a movie while maintaining the nuances that are found on television. Fans certainly want the Rick Grimes movies to do the character justice, so taking the time to get them right makes sense. However, as it’s been so many years since the Walking Dead films were announced, it’s also understandable that fans would be impatient for news. There might be some updates coming soon, but they won’t arrive this weekend.
