For the first time in Super Bowl halftime show history, hip hop was at the forefront. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem were announced as the performers, causing massive levels of excitement on social media. In media events leading up to the big game, the performers hinted at a potential surprise during the performance, causing tons of speculation. The actual surprise was not guessed by many, if anybody at all, but it was even better than expected.

New York hip hop legend 50 Cent shared the stage with the West Coast legends (and Eminem), being brought out as a surprise guest. 50 Cent performing would have been show-stopping on its own, but the way he came out really stole the show. In a nod to the music video for his hit song “In Da Club,” 50 was revealed on stage upside down. This was much to the delight of the internet, which was quite fast in pushing out quality memes about it.

Stuck Upside Down

One of the more versatile memes around, the “kid with veins popping out” template, can be modified to fit almost anything. This was a rather simple change, but one that made for a great meme. 50 loved it so much, he even shared it himself on Instagram.

This was not entirely out of left field, as a Pac hologram has been used before, and the deceased rapper recorded songs with both Dre and Snoop. Instead, the surprise was 50 Cent. Absolutely no disrespect should be given to him, as he is a legend in his own right and put on a great performance, but some people were a bit let down that there was no hologram. With the guys on Pawn Stars known for driving a hard bargain, this was the perfect meme.

Another Reddit meme via u/menina2017, this one references The Office. The Office is also full of meme-worthy moments, so it was only a matter of time before someone combined it with the events of the game.

Dr. Dre and Snoop both made the performance more fun to watch by showing off some of their other skills, but 50 had to have the most shocking of them all. It did become the meme of the night for a reason, after all. There truly is a scene from The Office for everything.

A Relatable One

Many people relate to the struggle of trying to plug their charger into the wall while they are already comfortably in bed. Having to get up out of the perfect position it took way too long to find, just to put a plug into a wall, is a frustrating thing. Depending on where the socket is on the wall, people often end up in awkward, contortionist-like positions trying to do it without getting up.

It is used to convey being proud or surprised at recognizing something, so it fits in with this performance. The image being flipped upside down was a nice added touch, as it is how 50 would have seen everyone watching him.

Being upside down like that for a few seconds is surely going to cause someone to feel quite light-headed, so one can only imagine how 50 felt having to actually rap and perform while being suspended like that. Each quarter of a football game is 15 minutes long, and it really would not be surprising if he was feeling a bit off for the entirety of the next quarter.

The Weeknd put up a memorable performance during the Super Bowl in 2021, and it was iconic in two ways. Primarily, it was iconic because of how good of a show it was but also due to the fact that it spawned a plethora of hilarious memes.
