Set in a mystical realm filled with an array of monsters and biomes, Valheim has players walking the shoes of a deceased Viking warrior as they attempt to bring order to a lawless land. Players can build bases, craft gear, and fight various bosses as they explore a fantastic landscape. It is a massive world and filled to the brim with dangers and treasures alike. But one of the game’s defining features is the challenging bosses that can be found all over the realm.

One of these bosses, Moder, can be found in the snowy mountain biome. Sporting black scales and white hair, Moder is a ferocious wyvern who can be summoned when players place three dragon eggs at her altar. Defined by her aerial tactics and frost attacks, Moder drops a dragon’s tear upon death and provides a trophy for the player.

How to Summon and Defeat Moder

As mentioned previously, Moder can be summoned in Valheim by placing three dragon eggs at her altar. These eggs can be found at nests throughout the mountain biome, usually guarded by drakes. They deal frost attacks and fight from the air, but they can still be taken out fairly easily by using a bow.

Players should also take this time in the mountains to kill some wolves and mine silver, both of which can be found in the region. They drop materials that can be used to make wolf armor which is known for its high resistance to frost. As Moder uses frost attacks as one of her primary abilities, this makes wolf armor extremely useful in the boss fight for anyone who does not have access to endgame gear. It is also a good idea to stock up on frost resistance mead, fire arrows, and poison arrows.

Once three dragon eggs are obtained, they can be placed upon Moder’s altar that is hidden somewhere within the region. It should be easily identified by its ceremonial bowls where players need to place the eggs. For those dedicated to preparation, players can build watchtowers, trenches, and walls around the ritual area to prepare cover for the boss fight. It is also recommended to do a sweep of the general area around the altar and take out any enemies who may be around. The last thing any player wants to see while fighting a boss is another enemy coming their way. But once the eggs are placed and the altar activated, the area should begin glowing and Moder should show up shortly.

Now the actual fight begins. As expected of a wyvern, she mostly attacks while in the air. So the player will mostly be forced to rely on their bow for inflicting damage. But always be ready to move. Her aerial frost attacks are no joke. Especially the one that looks like a barrage of frost projectiles. It has the ability to slow down the player considerably and Moder tends to follow it up with a more direct frost attack to inflict a lot of damage. Even with frost-resistant armor, the amount of damage is considerable, so players should get used to the idea of always being on the move to avoid her attacks.

Sometimes Moder will land on the ground to attack the player physically. These physical attacks are debatably worse than her frost abilities, and can easily take down any player who gets too close. This is especially true for players who are fighting Moder alone, so it is highly recommended for fighters to keep their distance.

This is because fighting Moder is a battle of attrition. Trying to take her down quickly is mostly impossible, and Moder herself can easily take down a player if she lands her hits. This means the most effective means of taking her down relies on avoiding her attacks and peppering down her health with a long-range attack whenever possible. With her large health pool, this will no doubt take a long time. But it can work. If the player has friends with them, it can be made even easier since one of them can distract Moder while the other players prioritize attacking her.
