An upcoming Valheim update will rework the survival sandbox’s Mistlands region, with developer Iron Gate Studio teasing the addition of giant spiders and a unique new bow. The Norse-inspired adventure was released in early access back in February 2021, and since then the game has been steadily expanding ahead of its official launch. Earlier this year a 2022 Mistlands expansion for Valheim was teased, with the update set to introduce new creatures and mechanics to the game’s mysterious area.

The procedurally-generated world of Valheim is made up of multiple different biomes, ranging from peaceful flat plains to massive craggy mountains. Each of these areas presents their own environmental hazards, and players are forced to battle roaming enemies as they explore the world to gather resources. As an early access title, Valheim continues to steadily expand thanks to regular updates from Iron Gate Studio. Over time these updates continue to add and improve mechanics, such as the player’s ability to build a base as a safe haven, and the recent Valheim frost caves update gave players claustrophobic new areas to explore which are teeming with new cultist enemies.

Valheim developer update, posted to the game’s Steam page, hints at exciting new features coming to the unforgiving survival experience. While already present in the game in an unfinished state, the Mistlands region will soon be fleshed out with unique new foes and a brand-new weapon. Concept art of the redesigned Mistlands features a mysterious staircase seemingly covered in slime or webs, hinting that the area will be occupied by enormous spiders. Valheim players brave enough to face this threat in the Mistlands will be rewarded with a unique new bow, however, giving them an advantage over enemies throughout the game’s other regions.

Valheim’s Mistlands update will dare gamers to explore a hostile region to acquire rare loot, and this follows a trend established by past updates. Last year a Valheim swamp threat update added hideous new monsters called Abominations to the survival sandbox’s murkiest areas, with only the bravest and strongest Vikings capable of facing them in battle. However, those who still dare to enter the swamps are rewarded with a new Root Armor set, and this risk-reward system seems to be carried into the Mistlands and its new bow.

Despite still being in early access, Valheim is a massive survival experience that continues to grow with each subsequent update. While players can currently visit the Mistlands in-game, Iron Gate Studio will soon overhaul the region by adding powerful rewards and a potentially arachnid threat. While the Mistlands bow will help players survive the harsh wilderness of Valheim, facing off against freakishly large spiders may not be worth the effort.

Valheim is available on PC.
