Valheim: Is Tree Farming A Waste Of Time?

Wood is a vital part of building and crafting in Valheim, the Viking survival game from Iron Gate Studio. It’s used to craft some great weapons, build bases, and construct boats for sea exploration. So, on the surface, creating a tree farm may sound like a good idea, but is it actually just a waste of time? Here are the pros and cons of tree farming in Valheim.

Forests in Valheim can be dangerous places, filled with enemies like greydwarfs who actively hunt players. A story-based event, “The forest is moving…” can even forewarn players of an incoming attack. At night, forests can become even more dangerous as certain enemies spawn more frequently then. Because of these dangers, starting a tree farm in Valheim may seem like a better, safer alternative to venturing into the forest to gather wood.

Tree farming can seem pretty enticing. Players just need to create the necessary space in their bases, plant seeds using the cultivator, and wait for trees to grow. With the right amount of protection around a base, players can watch their gardens grow in a relatively safer environment than the wilderness. However, tree farming in Valheim definitely comes with a list of pros and cons.

Pros & Cons Of Tree Farming In Valheim

The obvious benefits of tree farming in Valheim go beyond safety, however. It’s a way for players to grow large numbers of trees at once, and then cut them down for excess wood as soon as they’re fully grown. It’s also a way to keep trees close to home after forest resources have begun to thin out. However, tree farming can be a big time commitment and definitely has a few downsides.

A tree takes from about 50-80 minutes of real time to become fully grown, which means players may spend a lot of their time just waiting around. Additionally, once the trees are cut, it doesn’t seem like they grow back. Some of the best wood in the game, like Core Wood and Fine Wood, comes from Birch, Oak, and Ancient trees – none of which produce seeds that can be planted and cultivated.

So, while tree farming in Valheimmay not be a perfect substitute for gathering wood in the game’s various biomes, it can be a great way to supplement players with additional wood. Ultimately, it will come down to players’ preferences on whether or not starting a tree farm is worth the effort or not.
