Innovative storyteller Mark Millar is partnering with Netflix to debut a new vampire superhero comic,Night Club. The writer’s collaboration with the studio has been known for some time, and the upcoming title is his latest announced initiative.

Known for Kick-Ass, Wanted, and Kingsman, among several other properties, Millar’s voice has permeated the industry with concepts that frequently remix familiar tropes. Whether exploring a juvenile fantasy considering if superheroes existed in the real world, or reimagining the spy genre, Millar has consistently pushed the envelope with his work. Previously selling his company Millarworld to Netflix in 2017, Jupiter’s Legacy kicked off the studio’s announced adaptations of the writer’s beloved titles. During the pandemic, Millar conceptualized an original live-action series, but struggled to abandon his comic book roots.

Before it is adapted as a series, Mark Millar will write a six-issue miniseries published by Image titled Night Club releasing in early 2022. According to Syfy Wire, the miniseries follows three teenagers after they are bitten by vampires, choosing to use their newfound abilities to become superheroes. Partnering with artists Greg Capullo, Ben Templesmith and Ben Oliver for the covers of Night Club #1, the title has yet to find a definitive artist. However, he is in the process of reaching out to an artist he believes would be the right fit. Millar spoke with Syfy Wire on the upcoming story’s inception, saying, “It’s such an obvious idea I’m amazed nobody has ever done it as superheroes and vampires have everything in common… When I put this together as a potential TV franchise… we all really loved it and I couldn’t stop seeing the comic of this. I always like to do at least one volume as a comic, too.”

Based on the released covers, it appears that the teenage trio will resort to wearing luchadore wrestling masks for their superhero personas. In line with the homemade superhero costumes of Kick-Ass, the undead heroes are similarly fulfilling a childhood dream. Millar’s approach to writing the aspiring heroes also echoes the popular title, as he considered the thought experiment of how he would have reacted to becoming a vampire as a teenager, saying, “I’d never have killed people in dark alleys. I’d have guzzled bags of blood in hospital storage unit and made some money as a superhero instead. That’s what these kids do. They just decide to help people, win every sports prize, take on their school bullies, make a little cash and have a good time. But of course the vampires who bit them have other ideas.”

As a supernatural coming-of-age tale, the teenage cast of Night Club is likely to learn about themselves both through their powers and their weaknesses. Combining a superhero origin story with a horror thriller, they’ll realize they aren’t invincible even though they’re undead. As vampires, they’re faced with numerous weaknesses that accompany their abilities, from crucifixes and holy water to sunlight and garlic. Mark Millar’s Night Club is sure to bring a fresh spin to multiple genres at once.
