Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz of Vanderpump Rules recently announced the end of their marriage, and while fans were sad to hear the news, many slammed Tom for playing the victim card. Katie and Tom were together for a total of 12 years, nine of which were spent on Vanderpump Rules together. Tom always portrayed himself as the goofy puppy dog that put up with Katie’s nagging, but fans soon noticed that he had an underlying dark side that was demeaning towards women. During a fight with Stassi in Vanderpump Rules season 1, he cursed at her and poured some beer over her head.

Vanderpump Rules viewers were split on whether they were Team Katie or Team Tom. Many fans thought Tom was better off without Katie’s overbearing nature. However, others understood how Katie was fed up with Tom’s noncommittal attitude toward their relationship over the years. Tom put all his efforts into opening up a second bar with his BFF and fellow Vanderpump Rules star Tom Sandoval while he put Katie’s dream of starting a sandwich shop on the backburner. Katie ended up partnering with Ariana Madix, which fans thought was a better matchup.

Vanderpump Rules fan recently noted on Reddit, “Schwartz is still wearing his wedding band in IG stories.” A commenter responded, “Everything about him, from his IG divorce announcement to this, screams performative to me. I finally got a look at the whole entire divorce statement he made and his ‘woe is me I didn’t want to divorce Katie’ is so similar to his ‘but oh Bubba I didn’t mean to get blackout drunk again for the millionth time’ it’s laughable.” Another Vanderpump Rules viewer agreed, “Schwartz is just that kind of guy (…) who cries about his marriage ending even though he treated his wife like crap for a decade.” The fan then noted that Schwartz was causing problems in their marriage for the most part.

Tom’s Instagram statement addressing his and Katie’s split mentioned that it was Katie’s decision. Alas, Reddit users thought that Tom’s choice of words was a ploy to garner sympathy from fans. One fan wrote, “Did you read all three pages of the note? Where he also makes self-deprecating jokes? Also, to me, just saying he’s not the victim seems performative. Why even say that? It automatically implies Katie is the villain in my opinion.”

Many Katie fans think the breakup will be harder on her since she was more emotionally invested in their marriage. Tom was caught cheating on Katie twice while inebriated and didn’t remember making out with a random girl. Vanderpump Rules fans also remember that he was responsible for handing in his and Katie’s wedding papers but failed to do so, resulting in their marriage not being valid. Katie and Tom needed to have a ceremony two years later in order to make it official. Despite Vanderpump Rules fans being split on who to side with, Katie and Tom have been incredibly amicable and supportive of one another through this tough ordeal.
