Warning! Spoilers ahead for King in Black #5

In the conclusion to Marvel Comics’ King in BlackEddie Brock and his Venom symbiote just got a major upgrade and status quo shift, becoming the Marvel Universe’s new King in Black after the defeat of Knull. However, now that Eddie Brock is Marvel’s new Symbiote God, what does that actually mean for his future? The issue makes a point to say that things will never be the same for the Lethal Protector going forward, but what does that look like specifically?

In King in Black #5 from writer Donny Cates with art by Ryan Stegman, Eddie Brock comes back from the grave after being killed by Knull in the event’s first issue, having been resurrected and chosen to be the new host of the God of Light, Knull’s opposite (previously known as  the Enigma Force). Joining Thor’s hammer with Silver Surfer’s board, the cosmically upgraded Venom creates an immensely powerful axe, and he completely obliterates Knull, destroying him by sending him into the sun. However, once the dust settles the God of Light informs Eddie of his new status in the Marvel Universe.

Now, Eddie seemingly has command of Knull’s entire army of symbiotes, having freed them all from his long lasting grip and control. He also frees his son Dylan from Knull’s darkness as well, which is when the God of Light leaves Eddie, their mission and time together having been completed. It also tells Eddie that he no longer needs the light to protect him, as he’s been given a new role.

While Venom confirms that the God of Light is referring to Eddie’s new status as Marvel’s new King in Black, there’s still some mystery as to what this actually means going forward. Will Eddie cosmically ascend with his new powers and symbiote legions, becoming somewhat removed from the greater Marvel Universe akin to Wonder Woman’s cosmic ascension after the events of DC’s Dark Nights: Death Metal? Will it simply mean that Eddie and Venom will be stronger, having gained the ability to control other symbiotes at will? Perhaps Eddie will finally accept the Avengers’ invitation to join their ranks, especially now that he’s become a very valuable and key asset for any future symbiote threats down the line.

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that Eddie Brock and his Venom symbiote have become so much more than a mere Lethal Protector serving dark justice in the streets of San Francisco. Through Venom, Eddie has been redeemed, becoming a superhero in his own right and he now has the powers of a god, perhaps being on the same power level tier as Thor (if not greater). Whatever the future hold for Eddie and Venom, it’s likely that the highly anticipated Venom #200 will hold a lot of the answers, being the final send off for Cates and Stegman’s epic run on the character. Hopefully, it will reveal what being the new King in Black actually means for Venom’s future in Marvel Comics.
