The runtime for Venom: Let There Be Carnage has reportedly been revealed by Fandango and AMC Theaters and is the shortest live-action comic book film to date. The latest installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will see the returns of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the human host to the titular symbiote, Woody Harrelson as serial killer Cletus Kasady as he becomes host to the dangerous symbiote Carnage, Michelle Williams as Eddie’s ex Anne Weying, Reid Scott as Anne’s fiancé Dan and Peggy Lu as convenience store owner Mrs. Chen. It will also introduce Naomi Harris as Kasady’s love interest and super-powered villain Shriek and Stephen Graham as San Francisco Police Detective Mulligan, eager to find the bodies of Kasady’s victims.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage will see Eddie attempt to revitalize his journalistic career by interviewing Kasady ahead of his execution, though their meeting goes awry and Kasady becomes host to Carnage and goes on a murderous rampage through San Francisco. Eddie and Venom must use their skills as a lethal vigilante to put a stop to Carnage before it’s too late. After having its release date shifted numerous times from its original October 2020 slot, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is finally set to hit theaters in a few weeks and new word has supposedly come for the film.

With tickets now on sale for the superhero sequel, Fandango and AMC Theaters have revealed the reported runtime of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. At just 90 minutes long, the film falls short of its predecessor by a full 22 minutes and clocks in as the shortest live-action comic book film to date. However, Cinemark‘s page for the film lists its runtime as 95 minutes, which would put Sony’s film just ahead of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer for the lowest runtime.

In a time in which films in the Marvel Cinematic and DC Extended universes tend to run a minimum of two hours a piece and the first Venom clocked in as just under that, it’s rather surprising to find Let There Be Carnage coming in at just 90 minutes. That being said, a film’s runtime doesn’t always dictate its quality, regardless of the genre, as some stories don’t quite fit a 120-minute mold. Given Hardy has frequently discussed that he and the creative team behind the film worked hard to learn from the lessons of the first Venom, one such effort may have been to ensure the sequel doesn’t feel like it overstays its welcome.

Two of the biggest critiques for the first film centered on Ruben Fleischer’s “unfocused” direction and its inconsistent tone. With Venom: Let There Be Carnage bringing Andy Serkis into the director’s chair, the shorter runtime could very well work in the film’s favor to keep the story on track and as focused as possible. Only time will tell when it arrives in theaters on October 1.
