Much like other upcoming comic-book films, Venom’s highly anticipated sequel Let There Be Carnage got its release delayed due to the global pandemic. However, this hasn’t affected the hype of the film as it has only increased ever since the official trailer dropped this past May.

Offering a glimpse of Eddie Brock’s (Tom Hardy) growing relationship with the symbiote Venom and a first look at the antagonist Carnage, the Andy Serkis-directed venture has had fans memeing about the film since then. From comparisons with Zack Snyder to polarizing reactions over Carnage’s appearance, they’re all quite hilarious.

10 ‘It’s Today’

In this meme template, a young George Little (Jonathan Lipnicki) shouts ‘It’s today’ over and over again in a scene from Stuart Little. Perhaps that’s the emotion that fans felt when the trailer finally dropped on May 10th, complete with the film’s logo reveal, and visuals of Carnage.

As of now, the trailer uploaded by Sony Pictures Entertainment has already raked in over 30 million views. With the film expected to release around this September, this excitement is bound to be replicated.

9 ‘This Is Cinema’

Right at the very end of the trailer, viewers get to see Carnage charging towards the camera in a fit of fury. The glass-painted cathedral widows behind the creature make for an aesthetic visual. This has further made many fans wonder how Robert Richardson’s cinematography would help in subverting the big-budget superhero tropes of the film.

As a satirical jab at Martin Scorsese, the veteran director’s face is placed below the scene. It not only conveys the cinematic nature of the aforementioned scene but also mocks the director’s infamous disdain towards comic-book films in general. Interestingly, Richardson has also collaborated with Scorsese for films like Hugo and The Aviator.

8 Red Venom

If one were to generalize, Carnage just looks like a reddish version of Venom. However, there are physical differences that set both symbiotes apart. For instance, Carnage has a more unstable and less solid body while also lacking the white spider symbol on its chest, unlike the comic-book version of Venom.

In Let There Be Carnage‘s trailer, it’s hard to figure out how exactly Carnage differs from Venom in physical terms. This has prompted a few viewers to disregard Carnage as a ‘red Venom’ although it’s too soon to arrive at such a judgment.

7 ‘He’s So Ugly…’

On the other hand, some of the trailer’s viewers loved Carnage’s visual design and even found him to be comic-accurate. The sheer grotesqueness of the character has indeed made a few fans appreciate the ugliness of this alien creature.

The meme template is borrowed from the 2015 Marvel superhero film Ant-Man. In the original scene, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) gifts his daughter Cassie (Abbie Ryder Fortson) a hideous talking rabbit as a birthday present. Much to the viewer’s surprise, Cassie adores the toy and exclaims ‘He’s so ugly. I love him!’

6 Heart Racing

Despite Venom garnering mixed reviews, the film has still had a loyal fanbase who were awaiting the sequel. After much delay, the trailer did live up to the fans’ expectations who had been anticipating a faceoff between Venom and Carnage ever since the first film teased Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) in its post-credits scene.

This three-part meme template depicts the human heart transitioning from resting to a racing state as the name Carnage is revealed in red letters by the end of the trailer.

5 R-Rating

Venom and Carnage’s parasitic tendencies have the scope of unleashing a disturbing amount of violence and gore, as can be seen in a few comics like Venom: The Madness and Carnage USA. Even before the first film was announced, there was much speculation of Venom’s standalone adventures to bear darker tones and an R-rating. However, with the parent-friendly trailer of Let There Be Carnage, it is most likely to get a PG-13 rating by the MPAA.

The meme is a plays the quote, ‘Life is good but it can be better’ from Wonder Woman 1984. Pedro Pascal played the businessman and TV personality Maxwell Lord who looks at the camera and delivers his catchphrase to the audience.

4 ‘Where Is It?’

This meme denotes the anticipation that fans had been having since last year regarding the trailer. While it was obvious that the film would be massively delayed for release in 2020, there was still no sign of any teaser to give fans a glimpse of what is to come.

A scene from the first film featuring Riot and Eddie Brock is used to express the frustration that people had been having from Sony Pictures to drop a trailer. In early 2020, Sony even managed to offer a glimpse at the Marvel collaboration Morbius but the entirety of the previous year lacked any conversation around a Venom trailer.

3 ‘3,000 years’

As mentioned earlier, fans had to wait nearly a year for the trailer to drop. If anything, this prolonged anticipation might only increase the expectations from the film.

‘It’s been 3,000 years’ is a common meme template that originated from a Pokémon X and Y scene. The traveling Pokémon trainer AZ utters this line when he finally gets reunited with the creature known as the Fairy-type Pokémon called Floette. Since then, the scene has been reinterpreted in several memes.

2 Carnage Ruins Venom’s Life

As is evident from the opening frames of the trailer, Eddie Brock is adjusting well with Venom. Both live together and engage in day-to-day activities like shopping and cooking.

But of course, when Carnage gets unleashed later, Eddie and Venom’s peaceful life is bound to be disturbed. In the context of this meme, the protagonist is equated to the WWE wrestler AJ Styles who is walking without a worry, while an intimidating Undertaker stares at him from behind.

1 Flashback To The 2010s

Seeing Carnage in a live-action film would instantly provide delight to fans of Sami Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy who always hoped to see the creature in a fourth film. After 2007’s Spider-Man 3 introduced Venom, the series drew to a conclusion, much to the dismay of audiences.

However, this did not stop Marvel fans to discuss the possibility of Jim Carrey playing Cletus Kasady/Carnage in a future Spider-Man/Carnage film. In fact, a popular fan trailer from 2016 even incorporated some of Carrey’s most dramatic scenes to reimagine him as the iconic villain. Hence, watching the Let There Be Carnage trailer in 2021 would naturally induce nostalgia.
