A new trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage teases that the upcoming Sony sequel will change everything. The film, which is a follow-up to 2018’s Venom, was directed by motion-capture pioneer Andy Serkis, who has previously worked with Marvel in their MCU branch as Black Panther villain Ulysses Klaue. Venom 2, which hits theaters on October 1, stars Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, and Naomie Harris.

Let There Be Carnage takes place two years after the events of the original film, picking up with Eddie Brock (Hardy) as he is still getting the hang of being bonded with his titular alien symbiote. They have seemingly achieved some sort of stasis for the time being, but they are thrown back into trouble when Brock tries to get back into the reporting game by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady (Harrelson). Things go awry when Kasady becomes bonded with his own symbiote, Carnage (who has been given a more athletic, visceral movement style, according to Andy Serkis).

In a new trailer released on Twitter, Venom: Let There Be Carnage teases how game-changing the film is going to be. “The universe is expanding,” says the tagline, with the caption teasing that “there’s something way bigger happening.” Although they’re holding out in exactly what ways this film’s plot will be doing such a thing, it’s certainly intriguing, especially in light of Serkis’ recent comments about Venom eventually meeting Spider-Man. Check out the new trailer below:

Details remain murky on how the film will play out beyond the obvious fact of Venom squaring off against Carnage. However, Serkis has also teased that Venom: Let There be Carnage will be pushing the limits of its PG-13 rating, pulling no punches to emphasize “the danger and darkness and the threat and the menace of Carnage.” This instinct, compounded with the fact that this film will be pushing the Venom franchise into a wider universe, is certainly a thrilling prospect to consider.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is confirmed to be 22 minutes shorter than the first Venom, has been receiving overwhelmingly positive early buzz from audience previews. Everything is falling into place for this film to be more than just another superhero sequel. The Venom franchise already has a unique tone for films in the Marvel arena, but the team assembled here is uniquely attuned to delivering on the promises made by the trailer. Thankfully, there’s not long to wait now to see how this will all play out.
