What is the deal with Venom’s new villain Codex? Apparently, his true identity will still be unknown by the time Venom #30 releases come November. In the issue, it looks like there will be an epic showdown between the Lethal Protector and the ruler of the strange, dark future Venom is now trapped inside of within the pages of the latest Venom series and arc titled “Venom Beyond”.

Thus far in “Venom Beyond” from writer Donny Cates with art by Juan Gedeon, Venom and his son Dylan have been transported into a dystopic version of the future. A new world order is in charge, run by the symbiote dictator known as Codex, wielding an entire army of symbiote forces at his beck and call, including a symbiote-controlled team of Avengers.

This is the result a massive symbiote hive mind (that also grants Venom some really cool new powers that he had never had access to before). Venom and Dylan weren’t the only ones to travel to this grim and bleak future, however. They were also followed by another new villain to the Venom mythos, Virus, whose true identity is also unknown–but seems to have a pretty big grudge against Venom and Eddie. In any case, the cover art and the solicitation for Venom #30 do not bode well for Venom, and seem to indicate that Codex’s identity will still remain a big question mark. Here is the solicitation from Marvel Comics:

  • VENOM #30
  • DONNY CATES (W)
  • LUKE ROSS (A)
  • Cover by GEOFF SHAW
  • VARIANT COVER BY AARON KUDER
  • VARIANT COVER BY RYAN STEGMAN
  • SKETCH VARIANT COVER BY RYAN STEGMANTHIS IS IT! The face-melting finale to VENOM BEYOND, by Donny Cates and special guest illustrator LUKE ROSS! Trapped at the mercy of the dangerous new foe called CODEX, Eddie Brock will have to make an impossible choice!

The solicitation confirms Cates will still be writing, though it looks like Luke Ross will be taking over as artist from Gedeon (for this issue, at least). Furthermore, the cover shows that Codex is still masked and anonymous, and it seems incredibly likely that he’s a character of known importance from the past. It should also prove interesting to see how Eddie’s symbiote reacts in such close proximity to a being like Codex… who seems to have a large amount of power and control over symbiotes in general. A large circulating rumor theorizes Codex could be Eddie’s own son Dylan, grown up and exhibiting powers in symbiote manipulation, similarly to Codex’s own abilities. If this ends up being true, it would certainly be a big part of the “impossible choice” Eddie will have to make in the issue.

In must be just as frustrating for Venom as it is for fans to be dealing with not one, but two villains whose true identities are complete mysteries. Hopefully, Venom #30 will be able to clear up some of the big questions lingering for both readers and Venom himself when the issue releases this November.
