Warning: contains spoilers for Venom #1!

Since his first appearance, Venom has worn a twisted variation of Spider-Man’s logo on his chest. It stressed the connection between the two, and as a new day dawns for Venom and the symbiotes, this logo has taken on an awesome new meaning, showing Eddie Brock’s growth as a character. Venom #1 kicks off a new era for Venom and is on sale now in print and digital.

Venom and Spider-Man’s lives are forever intertwined. After Spider-Man inadvertently ruined Eddie Brock’s journalism career, he swore revenge on the Wall-Crawler, bonding with the black symbiote suit he obtained on Battleworld. At first a villain, Venom has over time become more heroic—a journey that culminated with last year’s King in Black crossover event. The Symbiote god Knull, AKA the King in Black, attacked Earth and enslaved many of its heroes. Venom helped rally the forces against the King in Black, and thanks to an assist from the Engima Force, the King was defeated. In the void Knull left behind, Eddie ascended, becoming the new King in Black; his son Dylan would bond with the former Venom symbiote. As the new leader of the symbiotes, Eddie begins charting a newer, more benevolent direction for them—and in the process, his use of Spider-Man’s logo takes on a new layer of meaning in Venom #1, written by Ram V and Al Ewing, with art by Bryan Hitch, inks by Andrew Currie, colors by Alex Sinclair and letters by Clayton Cowles.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

After sensing a ship in distress, Eddie dispatches four symbiotes to assist. When they arrive on the scene, Eddie takes control of one of the symbiotes to function as his eyes and ears. The twisted Spider-Man logo appears on the symbiote in Eddie’s control, separating him from the rest. The ship’s crew opens fire on the symbiotes, and Eddie guides the symbiotes into combat. As they fight the aliens, Eddie says he thinks that not only will Dylan be proud of him, but Spider-Man as well.

Venom and Spider-Man’s relationship has come a long way since they first crossed paths in 1988’s Amazing Spider-Man #300. Venom blamed Spider-Man for ruining his career, trying to kill the Wall-Crawler. As Venom’s journey from villain to anti-hero has progressed, the relationship has thawed, particularly as Eddie has learned the truth about Spider-Man. Spider-Man fought alongside Venom during the King in Black and even comforted Dylan when he thought his father dead. The hatred between Venom and Spider-Man has become respect, and Eddie’s use of the Spider-Man logo now represents this. It also brings Eddie’s progression from villain to hero full circle.

Venom’s use of a twisted Spider-Man logo first signified his hatred for the Wall-Crawler, but now it represents his newfound respect for Spider-Man, as well as his own progression from villain to hero.
