The Venture Bros. co-creator Doc Hammer confirms that one of his characters, Shoreleave, will return for the feature-length series finale. Originally developed by Christopher McCulloch, also known as Jackson Publick, the animated series centers on Hank and Dean Venture, fraternal teenage twin brothers who are roped into a variety of adventures around the world by their emotionally insecure and unethical super-scientist father Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture alongside the family’s bodyguard Brock Sampson. The Venture Bros. is a satire of the boy adventurer and Space Age genres that were popular in the early ’60s, namely the animated series Jonny Quest, who actually appears in the show, and The Hardy Boys.

First premiering in 2004, The Venture Bros. has received consistently rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its satirical approach to the genre and the overall humor and writing. The show would become one of Adult Swim’s longest-running original series, airing for over 15 years on the network while also holding the record for the fewest seasons produced of a scripted show per year for a continuous production, only airing seven seasons. Despite its popularity, The Venture Bros. would be quietly cancelled by Adult Swim in 2018, with the official announcement coming in 2020, though the network would later reunite with Publick and Hammer for a feature-length film that will serve as a series finale.

Nearly a month after his co-creator offered an update on the script’s completion, Venture Bros. co-creator Doc Hammer has taken to Instagram to confirm Shoreleave’s return for the feature-length film. Hammer made the announcement with a photo from a recording studio booth, confirming vocal production is also underway for the series finale. Check out the exciting reveal below:

Development on The Venture Bros. movie is certainly progressing at a solid rate since the announcement this past May, with Publick having revealed just prior to Halloween that the script for the film, which he co-wrote with Hammer, had been completed. Hammer’s latest update that Shoreleave will be returning for the finale is sure to come as exciting news for longtime fans of the series as well as an interesting tease of the story to come from the film. With the Venture Bros. season 7 finale having set up a search for a runaway Hank and a fight for Brock to bring Rusty home safely from the Guild of Calamitous Intent and the Peril Partnership, it would make sense Shoreleave and the rest of the O.S.I. would return to the fold for one final adventure.

The biggest cliffhanger audiences are eager to see explored from The Venture Bros. season 7 finale is the reveal that Rusty and The Monarch are in fact blood relatives. Given the very heated nature of their rivalry throughout the series, many felt this to be both an interesting new dynamic as well as a sensible explanation for his continued draw to his uncaring super-scientist archnemesis. With voice work currently underway on The Venture Bros. finale movie, fans should hopefully look forward to a release window being announced sometime soon.
