History Channel’s Vikings haven’t ever had a consistent theme of power couples that stood the test of time. In fact, few barely make it past a season! Ragnar and Lagertha were by far two of the main protagonists of the show and their relationship barely made it out of Season 1. So it isn’t much of a surprise that there could have been and were different suitors for Lagertha’s hand in marriage.

Some of those suitors could even arguably have been a better match for her than the love of her life Ragnar. Sadly, we can’t choose who we love, so unfortunately for Lagertha, she never found herself that serious with anyone after her beloved Ragnar remarried. Without further delay, here are 10 characters from Vikings (other than Ragnar) who Lagertha may have been better off with.

10 Kalf

Kalf was young, full of vigor and hope for a brighter future for his people. To at least a certain extent he was a young version of Ragnar. Sadly, because of his ambitions, he betrayed Lagertha instead of staying by her side. Who knows what would of happened if he would of remained loyal to her?

Imagine if he allowed her to be the figurehead, while he fought in various campaigns abroad, winning loyalty and respect from his people back home. Unlike some of Lagertha’s other suitors, Kalf did have true feelings for Lagertha and saw her as more than just a political stepping stone.

9 Harald

Like Kalf before him, Harald had the ambition that drive men to great victories. From the moment of his introduction, everyone (including audiences) knew he was a man on a mission to be King of Norway. He wanted to be like Ragnar in so many different ways; ways that maybe Lagertha could have taken a liking to.

Even though she did sleep with him, Lagertha never seemed to take him seriously. So a courtship was completely out of the question. Though one point of continual contention would be his dislike of her son Bjorn, which could have posed marital problems in their theoretical relationship.

8 King Ecbert

While Harald and Kalf hoped for power, King Ecbert of Wessex could exert it. Like Ragnar, Ecbert saw more than just short-sighted goals. He dreamed of expanding his realm outside of Wessex and maybe into foreign territory. It would have been fun to watch him as King of Kattegat.

Ecbert might never have loved Lagertha, but she would have had all the power she desired. In fact, Ecbert would have sought to please her power lust, rather than deny it. He might have even taken a backseat if it meant staying alive!

7 Ubbe

This might seem a strange pairing since Ubbe is the son of her true love Ragnar, but from a tactical standpoint it makes perfect sense. As Bjorn’s power begins to fade, Ubbe seems to be hitting his stride. Eventually, a conflict is going to ensue between Ubbe and Bjorn for power of Kattegat.

So, what better way to ensure that – whether he wins or loses – Bjorn remains safe than to marry his rival? In fact, by doing so, she might be able to stop a conflict from occurring at all, keeping Bjorn as the sole leader of the anti-Ivar forces!

6 Floki

Throughout most of Vikings, Helga and Floki were a mainstay. In fact, they might have been the only happy couple ever seen on the show. Sadly, Helga met her end, leaving Floki completely adrift in life.

Lagertha and Floki have a longstanding history together and maybe she could have brought him back from his despair if only given the opportunity. Both of them could have connected for no other reason than their deep love for Ragnar and maybe that would have been enough for the relationship to last. However, it’s worth noting that it’s possible that true love could have bloomed.

5 Erlendur

Admittedly, this pairing is one of the more far-reaching ones on this list. Partly because Erlendur had such a deep disdain for anything connected to Ragnar or Bjorn. However, if Erlendur would have survived to see Ivar become ruler of Kattegat, he might have sought an alliance to hold on to power in the regions outside of Ivar’s grasp.

He could have found this in Lagertha, who never held any love for Ragnar’s sons besides her own. Their hatred for Ragnar’s other sons could have made them a power-couple.

4 Heahmund

Bishop Heahmund was truly a man on the fence. He was deeply religious, even to the point of being considered a Christian zealot. However, he was also a man who gave into the sins of the flesh more often than he would have liked.

Instead of having a personal dialogue with himself over life choices, he chose to accept who he was. That was one of the things that attracted him to Lagertha, as she was content with who she was as a person and didn’t care nor need anyone else’s opinion on the matter.

3 Astrid

Astrid was basically a younger version of Lagertha. She was ambitious, humble, strong and unwavering; traits that Lagertha was known for. She even truly cared about Lagertha and wanted more than anything to be with her. So dedicated was she to Lagertha that she even accepted that she would always be second in Lagertha’s heart.

While Lagertha cared for Astrid, she knew that Astrid was not fully truthful when it came to her relationship with Bjorn. Plus, after leaving Ragnar, Lagertha never acted like she wanted anything more in a relationship than sex. Luckily, this strange love triangle didn’t seem to compromise any genuine feelings.

2 Athelstan

While Athelstan might not have been the type of guy that Lagertha craved for, he was actually invited into their bed on at least one occasion. Athelstan had an infectious personality that caused others to want to be near him. Sadly for Athelstan, the beautiful Lagertha was not that infatuated with him… at least compared to the love her ex-husband shared for the monk.

Athelstan might not could have won her heart as a warrior but could have opened her mind to other cultures, religious philosophies and practices that intrigued her true love Ragnar so much.

1 Rollo

Rollo was the forbidden love she for whatever reason chose never to dabble in much during her time on Vikings. The two had once shared a passionate romance that led to her becoming pregnant with Bjorn. However, once Ragnar sought her hand in marriage, she seemed to completely forget about Rollo, leaving him heartbroken without the love of his life and his son.

A son, who up until adulthood, didn’t even know Rollo was his real father. Sadly, even after Bjorn found out about Rollo, he outwardly rebuked him, claiming that Ragnar would forever be his father.
