As the popular fantasy TV show Vikings gets a sequel titled Valhalla and the final sixth season is set to be released this December, it’s great to look back at the show and remember all the adventures and hardships the characters had to go through. We saw two generations of Ragnar’s family fighting for power and trying to keep their people alive.

Along the way, there have been both steamy and awkward relationships on-screen which often ended in one of the two partners dying. But not everything was that bad for lovers in the world of the show! Here are five Vikings couples that are perfect together and five that make no sense).

10 Make No Sense: Ivar & Freydis

Ivar has always been the odd one. His father, Ragnar, wanted to kill him right after birth because the boy had an inborn dysfunction and wouldn’t be able to walk. Nevertheless, Ragnar decided against and the boy lived which led to constant bullying and the ultimate formation of pure evil that is adult Ivar. He even murdered his own brother!

Because of his disability, Ivar couldn’t have children, but Freydis seemed to be of a different opinion and even worshiped Ivar as a god. They did look cool together, but the pairing always seemed strange and would not work out in the long run. In the end, Ivar strangled Freydis to death once she revealed that she helped Bjorn and others to overthrow him.

9 Perfect Together: Ecbert & Lagertha

Just like her former husband, Lagertha has had serious relationships outside her marriage to her husband. Some of them were great, while others were questionable. Her relationship with King Ecbert, however, is one that has been admired by many fans. The two always had the same goals and were instantly attracted to each other.

Moreover, Ecbert valued Lagertha both for her desire to establish a good relationship between her people and his and for her sharp mind. In a way, their relationship was very similar to the one Lagertha and Ragnar had back when they were farmers.

8 Make No Sense: Ragnar & Yidu

As mentioned above, Ragnar has had relationships besides his marriage to Lagertha. However, his affair with Yidu is weird and even nonsensical. Not only does their age difference stand out but they also have a very strange dynamic seeing that Yidu was captured and enslaved by the Vikings.

You could say that the fate of this relationship was predetermined and even somewhat resembled that of Ivar and Freydis. Yidu provided Ragnar with a pain-killing drug that he subsequently became addicted to. Once she refused to give him the drug and threatened to reveal the reason for his guilt, he drowned her in a blind rage.

7 Perfect Together: Rollo & Gisla

This couple is a prime example of the enemies-to-lovers trope. The development of their relationship was quite interesting to watch, even though we didn’t see much of it on screen. And although Rollo turned his back on his own people, it didn’t feel like a complete betrayal and didn’t make the audience love this couple less.

At first, Rollo and Gisla were hated each other. They were forced to marry each other in order to make peace between the Viking and Frankia. But as time went by, Rollo came to love Gisla for her bravery and intelligence, while she realized that he wasn’t actually a stupid barbarian.

6 Make No Sense: Ubbe & Margrethe

Perhaps falling in love with slaves is in Ragnar’s blood, because his son Ubbe makes the same mistake. As young boys, Ubbe and his brothers would often have fun with Margrethe “rolling in the hay”, but Ubbe was the one to free her and eventually marry her.

Yet, their relationship falls apart because of her lust for power. At some point, she is left behind by her own husband and then found by Ivar who then orders to kills her after he has a dream that she stabs him in the heart. That dream was not entirely wrong seeing that Margrethe had plotted to kill Torvi, Bjorn’s children, and some other characters to become Queen of Kattegat.

5 Perfect Together: Bjorn & Torvi

Bjorn is definitely Ragnar’s best son (and a fan favorite, too), so he was bound to have at least one healthy relationship. His marriage with Torvi was one of the most pleasing things to watch in the entire show as they loved each other just like Ragnar and Lagertha did.

Bjorn was Torvi’s fourth husband after going through some abusive relationships. Bjorn valued her for her smartness, kindheartedness, and fighting skills. They had two sons and two daughters together but later decided to end their marriage on good terms. Afterward, Torvi married Bjorn’s younger brother Ubbe.

4 Make No Sense: Heahmund & Lagertha

Lagertha was great with Ecbert, but her affair with Heahmund always seemed to be kind of unnatural. Heahmund was quite self-involved and sly, but in a bad way. Of course, he probably wanted to protect his country when he advised his king to attack the Vikings when they offered peace. However, he was also admired by Ivar and left alive just because of how brutally he fought.

Once he was found after another battle, Ubbe wanted to execute him, but Lagertha didn’t let him. She and Heahmund then had a philosophical discussion, which was the only reason why she then decided to make love to him. Not only did it look strained, but it was also illogical. Afterward, when Heahmund had a dream that he was in hell, he decided to leave Lagertha and get back to god.

3 Perfect Together: Floki & Helga

Another sweet couple on the show was that of Floki and Helga. Unfortunately, their story is kind of sad if you consider all the things they had to go through. Both Floki and Helga were always loyal to each other and loved each other dearly. After being lovers for several years, Floki proposed to Helga once he found out she was carrying his child.

After the death of their daughter, Floki and Helga were going through a difficult period in their lives, yet they stayed loyal to each other. They subsequently adopted Tanaruz, a Spanish girl who was captured by the Vikings and whose parents were killed in the massacre. Tanaruz later killed Helga which made Floki become very depressed.

2 Make No Sense: Ragnar & Aslaug

By far the most controversial couple on the show was Ragnar and Aslaug. There are probably only a few fans who had genuinely liked this relationship, but many truly hated it. Even though Ragnar always wanted to have two wives, Lagertha was of a different opinion, so when he brought Aslaug home from one of his travels, Lagertha decided to leave him.

Aslaug was a smart woman, but she was also the one who seemed to have stolen Ragnar from Lagertha, which showed her in a bad light. She had four sons with Ragnar including Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar, which is one of the reasons why Ragnar valued her so much. Nevertheless, Aslaug cheats on him twice and even plots to get rid of him altogether. In the end, Lagertha gets her revenge and kills Aslaug.

1 Perfect Together: Ragnar & Lagertha

It is undeniable that Ragnar and Lagertha’s relationship is the most loved by fans. The two have been at the center of the series from the very beginning and remained some of the best characters even after their relationship fell apart, Ragnar died, and Lagertha grew old. All good things come to an end, but it was great to see them together.

Way back when the two were only farmers, Ragnar and Lagertha were extremely close to each other and loved and respected each other. Ragnar saw Lagertha’s wit and outstanding fighting skills, but also valued and trusted her. Lagertha felt the same about him. You could say that the cause of their growing apart was Ragnar’s ambition. But Lagertha never stopped loving him and both would have rare moments when they would remember their past life and wanted to go back to the way everything used to be.
