While most of the main characters in Vikings have more than one great love over the course of the show (Ragnar and Aslaug and Lagertha being the most famous love triangle), few characters have quite as many great loves as Bjorn Ironside. It seems, at times, as though he has a new wife almost every season of the show – although this is actually a slight exaggeration.

While he does fall for many women (and plenty of women fall for him), he attempts to be a good husband and father as best he can, and doesn’t cheat on the women he cares for (unlike his father). He marries so many times because the Viking life means that more than one marriage is ended by a battle, and his final marriages are able to happen at the same time. Here’s how it all plays out over the course of the show.

6 Season One – A Child Between Two Parents

Obviously, Bjorn does not have any romantic relationships in the first season of Vikings, because he is still a child at this point in time. However, his parents’ relationship obviously affects how he approaches his own relationships in the future. One of the major events that occurs this season and has an impact is on his trip to Gotaland with Ragnar – the trip where Ragnar meets Aslaug.

This means that Bjorn sees his father cheating on Lagertha with Aslaug, and he is absolutely furious about it. It’s clear that Bjorn sees this as unacceptable, and this is something that hints at how he will deal with relationships in the future.

5 Season Two – In Love With Thorunn

In season two, Bjorn falls in love for the first time, with Thorunn, an enslaved woman in Kattegat. This is the season where there is a time jump, and Bjorn goes from being a young boy to a man and a warrior, and both sides of him are visible when he is falling for Thorunn. At this point, he is unsure of himself, and not quite sure how to pursue her, especially given her status in Kattegat. Lagertha, seeing how he feels, frees her, and Thorunn starts training as a warrior, allowing a relationship to blossom between the two as something closer to equals.

4 Season Three – Falls For Torvi

Season three is a difficult one for Bjorn’s relationships – he and Thorunn fall apart, and he falls for Torvi, despite the fact that she is married. Early on in the season, things are going well for Bjorn and Thorunn, and she is pregnant with his child. However, everything goes wrong when she is injured in battle. Thorunn survives, but is left with a large scar that changes the shape of her face, and after she has their baby (Siggy), she becomes increasingly withdrawn and unhappy, and shuts Bjorn out as well. Eventually, Thorunn simply leaves Kattegat behind, and is never seen again. Siggy, meanwhile, ends up neglected, and eventually dies in an accident.

While the life he might have had with Thorunn and Siggy is falling apart, Bjorn finds comfort in the arms of Torvi, who is married to Erlender. The two slowly fall for each other, and when Thorunn tells him to go be with someone else, he does. It’s not an easy relationship, though. Bjorn is in love with Thorunn, and hurt at her shutting him out, and Torvi is struggling with Erlender, who treats her badly and is Bjorn’s enemy.

3 Season Four – Has A Family With Torvi

The fourth season starts with the resolution of the situation with Erlender, as Bjorn takes Torvi away from Hedeby, and the two begin an official relationship. Torvi then ends up murdering Erlender in order to protect Bjorn (and because he threatened the life of her son). This is another season with a time jump, and happily, Bjorn and Torvi stay together for the entirety of this jump, and have children of their own (Hali and Asa).

For many fans, this was the best relationship that Bjorn was in – and it was certainly the longest and the most stable. Throughout this season, the two are clearly in love, battling together side by side, and fighting for Lagertha. Because Torvi is Lagertha’s right hand, there are also no family conflicts, and when things start to cool off between them, it was heartbreaking to see.

2 Season Five – Leaves Torvi For Sneafrid, Then Falls For Gunnhild

Things change repeatedly again in the fifth season, when Bjorn ends up leaving Torvi, marrying again, and then losing his wife and falling for someone new. Things with Torvi come to an end slowly, as Bjorn starts to pull away from her, and simply seems to lose interest (something that he later admits was not handled particularly well). When he meets Sneafrid, the daughter of an ally, he is clearly enamored – and when Torvi sees this too, she speaks with Bjorn, and tells him that she understands, and they can end their connection.

His time with Sneafrid, though, is short-lived. The two marry, but she is almost immediately killed in battle, and he is left alone – and fleeing for his life, to England. There, he has a brief fling with Elsewith, but nothing comes of it, and eventually, he meets Gunnhild. Originally on the opposing side, Bjorn and Gunnhild quickly form a connection, and Bjorn ends the season in a relationship with her.

1 Season Six – Married To Two Wives (Gunnhild & Ingrid)

Even in the final season of the series, Bjorn is still finding new women to marry – although this time, he is able to maintain his marriage to Gunnhild at the same time as marrying a second wife, Ingrid. For most of the season, it is clear that Gunnhild and Bjorn are perfectly matched, and when Gunnhild notices that he has started paying attention to Ingrid, she decides to accept this, and there is a second wedding. It is interesting that while Ragner proposed this arrangement to Lagertha, she left (with Bjorn), but Bjorn ends up in this situation himself. Unlike his father, though, he never sleeps with any women without the permission of a current wife or partner – and this may be part of the reason that he has two wives at the time of his death. Of course, it also comes down to Gunnhild’s personality, and her willingness to accept this so that Bjorn can be happy, and she can be secure in her own position, too.
