The final season of the original show saw Ubbe, son of Ragnar, sail west toward the Americas, seemingly settling there while also finding Floki, but now Vikings: Valhalla can finally show what exactly happened to him. The scenes in North America had major significance, especially showing Ubbe’s mirroring of not only his own father’s willingness to explore but to mingle with foreign cultures. With Vikings: Valhalla on the horizon, it presents an unequaled opportunity to show the viewers what became of Ubbe.

While it is not revealed by the original show exactly what happens to Ubbe and his crew of settlers, it is inferred that they decide to stay there indefinitely, as they’re sick of the wars and fighting of the old world. If this is the case, the timeline of Valhalla’s true story provides the spin-off with some unique opportunities to explore Ubbe’s story once again. While it may not be a plot point lingered on too greatly, it’s certainly a unique opportunity to tie the two shows together subtly for long-time viewers.

While Valhalla is set to introduce a slew of new characters to the viewers, some of the most notable among them are Leif Erikson and his sister, Freydis Eriksdottir. Their historical notability is instantly recognizable to many, for they are widely renowned for their travels to Vinland, a Viking settlement in North America, hundreds of years before other Europeans would land there. Valhalla promises to differ greatly from Vikings and, as a result, distance itself from the plotline of the original show. However, this doesn’t make adding in ties to old characters and old plotlines out of the question. Leif and Freydis’ remarkable travels not only mirror the daring adventures of Ubbe decades before them, encompassing the daring and bravery of Ragnar during his own travels, but they also hint at the potential for a more tangible connection between the two shows.

Whether or not the settlement of Ubbe and Torvi survived beyond the generations that originally settled is up entirely for debate, but it certainly opens up opportunities for the new spin-off to explore. It could be the case that Leif would find remnants of Viking settlement, discover a small existing Viking settlement or even notice hints of Viking descendants merged with the local cultures. Regardless of what path the show takes, there are certainly story timelines to connect Valhalla and Vikings available for the writers to use, and it would seem like a wasted opportunity if they didn’t.

The fact that Leif and Freydis had been chosen as the show’s main characters seems to further reinforce this final point. Both historical characters are most known for their travels. However, the trailers thus far predominantly pit them at the center of the conflicts taking place in England. Specifically, choosing Leif and Freydis not only allows the writers of the show to pick notable Viking names but relates them to Ragnar through their desire to explore. Not to mention that this allows the writers to once again visit North America, if they so wish. While it remains undecided exactly what will be taking place, and what will be shown through the seasons, the potential to revisit and end Rollo’s story through the specific choice of characters, such as Harald Hardrada, only reinforces the promise of Leif’s story uncovering Ubbe’s.

Regardless, Leif and Freydis’ adventures are sure to excite viewers and bring an interesting new perspective. With so many moving pieces and plots unfolding, it is likely there will be hints and nods to Valhalla’s predecessor throughout. With the introduction of Leif and Freydis, one of these nods from Vikings: Valhalla can finally show what happened to Ubbe Ragnarson.
