Actor Justin Long, known for Live Free or Die Hard and Jeepers Creepers, has joined the cast of Dear David, a film based on a ghost story that went viral. Adam Ellis, a former BuzzFeed employee, wrote a series of tweets in August 2017 that told the ghostly tale of a dead boy named David haunting him with the intent to kill him. The story blew up, and Ellis quickly found himself with over a million followers. Now, BuzzFeed Studios and Lionsgate are producing a film based on Ellis’ tweets. John McPhail, who previously helmed Anna and the Apocalypse, is directing from a script by a relative newcomer, Mike Van Waes.

According to THR, Long is joining the cast as the head of BuzzFeed alongside fellow actors, Augustus Prew and Andrea Bang. Prew, who is currently working on Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series, is playing Ellis in the lead role. Bang, best known for her role on Kim’s Convenience, is playing a currently unnamed supporting lead.

Even though Long’s casting was just announced, Dear David is said to have wrapped production. The film is currently looking to release in the Fall of 2022, though no official date has been given. Audiences familiar with the viral story may know what to expect, though expanding it into a feature film will allow fresh ideas to surprise viewers. However, with Prew playing Ellis and Long tackling the head of BuzzFeed, it’s clear that the film is pulling from its real-life inspirations. As Dear David gets closer to release, further details, including a trailer, will be forthcoming.
