Netflix unveils the official trailer for Vivo and reveals an August release date for the Lin-Manuel Miranda-led animated musical adventure. The film centers on the titular kinkajou, who befriends a local Havana musician named Andrés and spends their days playing music together. However, when tragedy strikes and Vivo learns of Andrés’ regret of never expressing his love to his former musical partner, the one-of-a-kind honey bear sets off on a journey to her farewell concert in Miami, Florida to deliver the love song Andrés wrote for her with the help of energetic tween Gabi.

Alongside Miranda, the animated film features an all-star cast including Ynairaly Simo, Zoe Saldana, Juan de Marcos González, Michael Rooker, Bryan Tyree Henry, Nicole Byer and Gloria Estafan. Development on the film began over a decade ago when the In the Heights and Hamilton creator pitched the film to DreamWorks Animation, only for the 2015 restructuring of the studio to see the project dropped and Sony Pictures Animation acquiring it shortly thereafter. Originally scheduled for a December 2020 theatrical release, Vivo shifted numerous times until the COVID-19 pandemic saw Sony elect to license the rights to the film to Netflix.

Across his 20-plus-year career, Miranda has made a name for himself in the musical genre and Vivo looks to be another thrilling outing for fans of the three-time Tony Award winner. With Miranda having written multiple new songs for the film and reuniting with In the Heights and Hamilton composer Alex Lacamoire, the film is sure to be jam-packed full of catchy new tracks to make viewers laugh, dance and possibly even cry to. Given the film also marks Sony Pictures Animation’s first foray into the musical genre, the first trailer points to a strong first effort for the studio.

Even if the film can’t reach the same critical heights of Miranda’s plays brought to life on the screen, namely his highly acclaimed In the HeightsVivo is sure to still come as an entertaining adventure for audiences young and old. Additionally, with a star-studded cast built around him, some gorgeous-looking animation and a story sure to bring the same amount of tears as any Pixar film, it looks to be another crowd-pleasing effort from all involved. Only time will tell when the animated musical arrives on Netflix on August 6.
