Wakanda Forever trended on Twitter today as Chadwick Boseman fans paid tribute to the actor on what would’ve been his 45th birthday. Boseman was silently fighting a battle with colon cancer for years before he ultimately passed away last August. Boseman was a truly incredible person and performer, and his unexpected death shocked the world. Family, friends, and fans mourned the Black Panther star as a great man cut down in his prime.

Boseman first made a name for himself in 2012 by starring as Jackie Robinson in 42, and he went on to play several iconic Black historical figures such as James Brown in Get on Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. Despite his passing, 2020 ended up being one of Boseman’s best years in terms of his work. The actor was praised for his performance as Stormin’ Norman in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. He also received his first Oscar nomination for his outstanding performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which many thought the actor was a shoo-in to win the award.

Today, on Boseman’s 45th birthday, fans of the actor took to Twitter to remember and praise him for his wide range of impactful work. As a result, Wakanda Forever was trending as people online used the salute from Black Panther to pay tribute to the star who made T’Challa such an instantly iconic and essential character on the big screen. Here are some examples of what people were saying:

The phrase Wakanda Forever is also being used as the title for the next Black Panther film. Director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios decided to move forward on the sequel without recasting Boseman’s T’Challa, instead opting to use the movie to honor both Chadwick’s and T’Challa’s legacy. In an interview on the subject, Coogler said: “It’s difficult. You’ve got to keep going when you lose loved ones. I know Chad wouldn’t have wanted us to stop. He was somebody who was so about the collective. Black Panther, that was his movie.”

Figuring out how to move forward on the Black Panther series without Boseman or T’Challa has proven to be only one of several hurdles that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has faced. Shooting the film during an ongoing pandemic has brought many new challenges to the crew. And the film had to shut down production entirely recently, as star Letitia Wright is recovering from an injury. Regardless of the film’s production issues, Wakanda Forever is undoubtedly one of the most hotly anticipated films of next year, as fans of Chadwick Boseman eagerly await the film that aims to carry on the actor’s legacy.
