The Walking Deadlong-awaited season 10 finale finally arrived on AMC this past Sunday and hit series low ratings. The Walking Dead was one of the many television shows to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year. The season 10 finale, “A Certain Doom,” was supposed to air back in April as per its original schedule, but the pandemic disrupted post-production work. As a result, fans had to spend months waiting for the conclusion to the Whisperer War. Finally, it was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that The Walking Dead‘s onetime season 10 finale (as now the season has been expanded by six episodes) would air on October 4.

Now fans finally have their answers about how the Whisperer War would finish. The finale saw Beta (Ryan Hurst) meet his end as a result of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) careful planning, and Maggie (Lauren Cohen) made her triumphant return. Beyond that, “A Certain Doom” laid the groundwork for what’s coming next in The Walking Dead seasons 10 and 11, which will be the zombie show’s very last.

The arrival of The Walking Dead‘s original season 10 conclusion should’ve been a massive affair, but its ratings suggest otherwise. Per SpoilerTV, “A Certain Doom” was viewed by 2.73 million viewers and scored a 0.87 demo rating. For comparison’s sake, the first episode in The Walking Dead season 10 earned 4 million viewers and a 1.4 demo rating. The last episode to air in April, “The Tower,” had 3.49 million viewers and a 1.13 demo.

Once the biggest show on cable television, The Walking Dead has seen its ratings decline since the season 7 premiere, which concluded the controversial cliffhanger of Negan killing one of the main characters. However, this is the lowest The Walking Dead has ever reached. Prior to this, the series had only dipped below 1 in the demo once before; even the ratings for the first season were higher than The Walking Dead‘s season 10 semi-finale. Most likely, the long gap between episodes led to some disinterest among viewers, which arguably has been brewing for some time.

Therefore, it’ll be interesting to see if The Walking Dead rebounds from this when it returns for the remainder of season 10, or even when it comes to its final season. While one episode of poor ratings isn’t a complete death toll, it does indicate that AMC was smart to announce season 11 as the show’s last. At the same time, AMC is developing a couple of Walking Dead spin-offs, and it remains to be seen how well they will perform. Nevertheless, The Walking Dead‘s long-awaited episode certainly stumbled a bit upon arrival despite despite being the conclusion to the Whisperer War.

The Walking Dead season 10 will continue in 2021.
